Ukraine is a corrupt black hole. If you pour $50 billion of U.S. aid in, it will all be taken. And we are bankrupt now, $16 Trillion in debt. And the EU is bankrupt.

We cannot try to dictate events throughout the world. That is not a conservative system.

The gas pipelines running thru the Ukraine from Russia into Western Europe give the Russians some leverage.

Roughly speaking, about four out of every six people in Ukraine are ethnic Ukrainian and speak the Ukrainian language. Another one in six is ethnic Russian and speaks Russian. The last one-in-six is ethnic Ukrainian but speaks Russian. This map shows where each of those three major groups tend to live.

Here's why this matters for what's happening in Ukraine now: Since it declared independence in 1991, the country has been politically divided along these ethnic-linguistic lines. In national elections, people from districts dominated by that majority group (Ukrainian-speakers who are ethnically Ukrainian) tend to vote for one candidate. And people from districts with lots of ethnic Russians or Russian-speakers tend to vote for the other candidate.

Exactly. What is our national interest in Ukraine? This is a struggle between the EU and Russia. Let them send money.

Déjà vu all over again? Perhaps Putin will claim Eastern Ukraine as part of Russia or at least a separate puppet state.

Pictures of one of the houses on Yanukovych's "private" compound, luxury and excess

So what?

More exactly, how does this help me to understand what I, a natural-born US citizen, should do or not do?

Hopefully he has been driven out for good

Like Janos Kadar, he'll be back, with transportation.

Well one thing is clear from that map — everyone voted for the Viktor.

Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, applauded House passage of H. Res. 447, which calls on all sides in the ongoing confrontation in Ukraine to refrain from violence and to work toward a peaceful resolution of the crisis. The bipartisan legislation, authored by Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), recently passed the Committee unanimously. Chairman Royce issued the following statement on the legislation’s passage:

Chairman Royce said: “Ukraine’s stability and continued democratic development are important for U.S. national interests. The Ukrainian people’s determination to ensure basic human rights and freedoms has been inspiring. That determination is being demonstrated by the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian citizens who have peacefully taken to the streets in defense of those rights. This protest movement has since become a struggle between those who want a democratic future based on the rule of law for Ukraine and those who are prepared to use violence to turn back the clock. Passage of this resolution comes at a decisive moment in that struggle.”

You don’t have to do a damn thing. You don’t even have to pay attention to any of this. Just go about your business and maybe watch some olympics coverage.
