Live Stream as of 5:55AM CT

Ukrainian President and honorary member of the Party of Regions of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych arrived in Kharkiv in the early hours of Saturday, a source with knowledge of the situation told Interfax.

Yanukovych is supposed to take part in a congress of lawmakers from southeastern regions of Ukraine on Saturday, he said.

"This is what is planned, but the situation is changing rapidly. Changes are possible," the source said.

A high-ranking source from Yanukovych's entourage had said earlier in an interview with the Dzerkalo Tyzhnia (Mirror Weekly, ZN.UA) that Yanukovych, accompanied by a narrow circle of especially trusted security guards, had flown to Kharkiv from Kyiv at 10:40 p.m. without stopping over at the suburban presidential residence of Mezhyhirya.

The source said Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Rybak and presidential chief of staff Andriy Kliuyev were on the same plane with Yanukovych.

Can anyone explain what is really going on? I know the EU is trying to take control and then Russia is pushing back.

Could this be the beginning of a movement for Eastern and Southern Ukraine to secede and form an alliance with Russia?

I don’t think this is over.

I seriously doubt that Russia can keep itself from pulling strings and throwing around money in an effort to play the east against the west of The Ukraine with the hope of a full blown civil war into which it can insert itself, militarily.

Eastern Ukraine wants membership in the EU, the Western part no. Viktor Yanukovych is pro Russian.

Sheesh, how did that recently restored Ukrainian Contitiution fall apart so quickly…

Perhaps KingHussein could sent them over our constitution. It’s solid. Like a rock. Besides, we’re not using it.

If he has left Kiev he has lost the game. Vitali Klitchko and newly freed Yulia Timoshenko are organizing things

Putin will be stuck with a fait accompli and won’t be able to intervene.

"Eastern Ukraine wants membership in the EU, the Western part no."

Isn't it the other way 'round?

Tymoshenko has just left prison, according to Ukrainian TV. She’s officially free.

I know the EU is trying to take control and then Russia is pushing back.

The majority of Ukrainians want a closer alliance with the European Union. The EU is not "trying to take control",the people are. It's true that the EU is a very imperfect entity but is light years better than is Vlad Putin's "New and Improved" USSR.I'm stunned and saddened to see Freepers here who are supporting the KGB Golden Boy in this matter.I suspect they're the same ones who said in November 2012 "Romney's not Reagan and he's not Palin, therefore he's no better than Obama...so I'm staying home".

I also expect those same Freepers to come out and proclaim what a brave and wise act it was for Obama to whisper that he'll show Vlad "more flexibility" after the 2012 election.

Well stated.

Yes. She is immensely charismatic and popular in some areas. Her penchant for self dealing got her in trouble that last time. Maybe she has cleaned up her act.

Good post. I live here in the EU, and while it’s not perfect (nothing is, let’s face it) it’s a damned sight better than Putin’s “Soviet Union 2.0”; and you’re quite right - the majority of Ukrainians WANT a closer alliance with the EU, and not just folks in the Western part of Ukraine.

Let’s hope so. Maybe that time in prison gave her a little time to reflect on matters.

Either that, or fuelled a lust for revenge that will be epic in its proportions!

What a miraculous recovery...a few months ago Tymashenko was reported to be on her death bed with her lawyers and other human rights "activists" insisting she be allowed to fly to Germany for emergency medical treatment.

Because my mother was born there I'm an Irish citizen as well as a US citizen. As a result I suspect that I follow events in Europe a bit more closely than do some in this country...including some here at FR.There seems to be many, many people in the West who believe that the USSR is dead and buried and that Vlad Putin is just a regular guy.IMO that attitude is breathtakingly naive.
