With no perceived threats to rights, gun sales way down

With no recent high-profile events to drive the level of purchases seen in recent years, gun sales are way down.

"Background checks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, considered to be the most accurate means of tracking gun sales, plunged by a third in January compared to the year before," CNN reported last week. "There were about 1.66 million background checks last month and nearly 2.5 million in January the year before."

The sharp decline can be seen in Wisconsin, where the state's handgun hotline registered only 7,702 handguns purchased in January, down from 22,214 in January 2013, according to the state Department of Justice, a whopping 65 percent decrease. Those figures don't include long-gun sales, which are tracked through the federal gun registry.

I perceive a threat right there. The law says a federal registry on gun sales is not kept and background checks destroyed after 24 hours. There are exceptions but normal gun sales are not supposed to be part of any federal gun registry. (by the way I'm not naïve when it comes to the feds. Also the NSA has the background check telephone call.)

It is a BS article.

Try to buy some ammo and see what you find.

Few months back it looked like the shelves in nearby WalMart were recovering a bit, now totally bare again.

Same with ammo and reloading components at the on-line supply houses.

And finally, Remington is moving to AL. Company formed in NY in 1816. Moving. hee hee hee

They were saying that the company was expanding to AL. But the local paper in AL said MOVING. Which implies corp. headquarters would be moved.

If you think this is over, you need to think again.

With my "larger than squirrel" hunting days all but over and 60 staring me right in the face, I'm at the lowest firearm inventory I've had in 30+ years. Somewhat to my surprise, I'm actually comfortable with it.

--maybe ammo manufacture can catch up, also-- Within the last month, I have been able to get back up to inventory on everything but rimfire. Last year, I stopped using overpriced and underavailable .22LR, resorting to my HW springer. After sorting out a few issues and rediscovering the fine qualities of a good air rifle, I don't think I'll be returning to the level of .22LR consumption of my earlier days even when that ammo situation improves.

It is an excellent time to replace that AR that was lost in a canoeing accident.

With even the Great Lakes frozen over, fewer and fewer guns have been lost in fishing accidents. Maybe an occasional pistol while ice fishing, but that's it.

--located thirty miles from Frontsite, the local Walmart used to get ammo by the pallet-

-don't really have a way to judge overall demand here, but the Walmart shelves empty quickly--even with a three box limit per customer--

That was me alone.

Don't sell yourself short. John Buhmiller was quite a bit older when he took off to Africa to test his cartridge designs on buff and elephant.

I guess the financial genius who wrote this has never heard of “Market Saturation?”

I have faith in Obastard going to bat for the gun manufacturers again, next tragedy he decides to exploit for political gain. He can’t help himself. I wouldn’t be shorting Sturm Ruger stock just yet.

Someone posted a picture on a thread the past couple of days that said something to the effect of:

Danger, river bottom is full of guns.

Last year, I bought all the guns I will ever need or want. Why would I do that again this year?

Well, OK... There is always just one more gun that I really, really want...

But my big wife-approved, budget-busting buying spree is over.

It seems as though the online reloading supply places can’t get their orders filled, shipped into them either. They get much smaller orders longer distances apart without any answers to why; no joke. Money slipping right through their hands and they claim it’s only going to get worse in 2014.

Well, I began collecting reloading supplies in January 2013.

Don’t have enough yet, but it is not as bad as when I started.

Have not purchased any guns. Just reloading and ammo.

I am not surprised at what you told me, but think I may buy a little more because of what you said.

Copy that

John Buhmiller was quite a bit older when he took off to Africa to test his cartridge designs on buff and elephant.

I read articles some years ago about John Buhmiller's trips to Africa, and now that you mention it, he wasn't a spring chicken at the time... I also remember thinking that he was a tad on the small side to be regularly absorbing some of the recoil his rifles generated.

(He also didn't dress anything like Hollywood's idea of a man on safari.)
