Amazing Grace
(Click)

By John Newton

Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed!
.
Through many dangers, toils and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, Who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.
.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.

Today is the anniversary of an historic day in the annals of American history. The raising of the flag on Iwo Jima is one of the most iconic images to ever represent the American struggle for democracy and freedom in the world. The image is as recognizably American as the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore.

By the morning of February 23rd, 1945 the battle of Iwo Jima had already been underway for several days. The 2nd Battalion, 28th Marines battled to the top of Mount Suribachi, a huge volcanic mountain that overlooks the rest of the island.

As you may have seen in the film “Flags of Our Fathers” directed by Clint Eastwood, the first flag raised over Iwo Jima was a small one crudely tied to a metal pole salvaged from wreckage found on top of Mount Suribachi. The second, larger flag, raised on a better-suited flagpole, is what we recognize today as the famous depiction of the 4 Marines atop the mountain.

The dramatic photograph IWO JIMA was taken on February 23, 1945 by Joe Rosenthal an Associated Press photographer shadowing US Marines in the Pacific. It won him a Pulitzer Prize and went down in history as the inspiration for the USMC Memorial, various stamps, posters, and other timeless depictions of the Battle of Iwo Jima.

Please use this anniversary to honor the memory of all veterans who have served their country in wartime throughout the years. We owe everything we have today to the service and sacrifices of our veterans, especially those who served in our most recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

I just thought that remembering the event & the event’s annaversary date was important. Thought to do so was sort of a Prayer.

Mighty warm out there today. I put some pear grafts on an apple tree for my FIL. It hasn’t been producing, so I will try to change it over to pear.

My MIL asked where I learned to graft and I told here that was a must growing up on the farm and being in FFA. I always had luck with pears, peaches and plums but seldom could get a pecan graft to take.

Dad was just the opposite. No problems with pecans or grafting plums, apricots, nectarines and such onto peach stock. He also grafted citrus and roses. I never had luck trying those combos, roses or citrus.

Hi Kathy and THANK YOU so much for the Sunday chapel thread.

Another heat wave?

Bet that will be mushy.

2” of snow on Sunday, 2” Sunday night, 3” predicted today and 2 more inches tonight — unless the weather report changes, of course.
