Police chief forced to apologize over comments (Austin jogger)

Austin police chief Art Acevedo has issued an apology for comments he made during a press conference yesterday concerning the arrest of a female jogger near the University of Texas campus on Thursday.

Acevedo dismissed the controversy over police handling of a jaywalking jogger, saying 'Cops are actually committing sexual assaults on duty so I thank God that this is what passes for a controversy in Austin, Texas.'

Today, he released a statement saying that he was trying to put the arrest of jogger Amanda Jo Stephen 'into context by bringing attention to the fact that law enforcement deals with many acts of serious misconduct' including recent cases of police officers sexually assaulting civilians.

'In hindsight I believe the comparison was a poor analogy, and for this I apologize,' reads his statement.

Why is he apologizing? Given what we’ve seen other cops do in arrests, he’s right.

‘She did the limp routine, and in 28 years of law enforcement, I can tell you it happens all the time,’ Acevedo said.

She has cry baby written all over her.

...concerning the arrest of a female jogger...

She can count her lucky stars that she did not have anything resembling a weapon or dog. The donut disposal machines may have shot her or the dog.

I am somewhat familiar with Austin. After watching the Y-tube version of the episode it appears that this 24-year old brat was deprived of never having her butt spanked when skrieking in public as a two-year old. In some areas of the City where retarded “university” students congregate, jay walking can create a real traffic problem.

A suggestion — Engage brain before spontaneously ranting about peace officers! Just a thought from Texas.

He said the police are sexually assaulting people in other cities ‘so I thank God that this is what passes for a controversy in Austin’

***************

The jay walking, bicycles and drivers have been targeted in this area. Most likely
this jay walker would have only gotten a warning had she stopped. But becoming
confrontational got her a ticket. Twenty four years old, sits down and begins
to bawl, what an adult.

Here’s Acevedo’s apology in full:

“Yesterday’s press conference related to the arrest of a jogger by members of the
Austin Police Department (APD) was the culmination of an emotional week for the APD,
our extended APD family and me personally.

During the press conference I attempted to place the arrest into context by bringing
attention to the fact that law enforcement deals with many acts of serious misconduct.
This includes recent instances in the news of sexual assault by police officers
in other cities.

In hindsight I believe the comparison was a poor analogy, and for this I apologize.
I stand committed to transparent leadership and will continue to engage the
community we serve in an open, honest, and timely manner.

Chief Art Acevedo”

From the article: “Lawbreaker: Austin PD said the woman has been charged with failure to identify herself to police and a class B traffic signal violation”.

Jay walking justifies four armed “Donut Disposal Persons”?

As for the whine that jay walkers pose a significant traffic obstruction, the rest of America deals with student groups, especially as they bring huge amounts of money to a community in return for little of value. Should any doubt the accuracy of my statement on cash flow and value received, check Starbucks.

They hire ‘Liberal Arts majors’. Trust me, Austin gets huge amounts of cash and the students get a diploma and then fight other recent grads for a Starbucks job.

Losers in that fight work in the ‘Fast Food Industry’.

What ever happened to “To Protect and To Serve”? Beefing up police patrols to crack down on jaywalkers? Seriously? Insanity.

Your suggestion is well-received, but misplaced: I never ranted about the officers in this case.

And by the way, the young female jogger should send a note of thanks to the police chief thanking him for his cops not sexually assaulting her. Citizens of Austin should thank the chief for catching another evil jaywalker. Insanity.
