How Obamacare Could Unlock Job Opportunities
New York Times ^ | February 20, 2014 | By SHAILA DEWAN

Posted on 02/23/2014 7:43:28 AM PST by Oldeconomybuyer

--SNIP-- In February, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the Affordable Care Act would reduce employment by the equivalent of 2.5 million full-time jobs. Opponents seized on this as evidence that Obamacare is a job killer. But that’s not what the C.B.O. meant. “The estimated reduction stems almost entirely from a net decline in the amount of labor that workers choose to supply, rather than from a net drop in businesses’ demand for labor,” the report says. In other words, if people work less, it will be by choice.

It may seem counterintuitive, but from an economics perspective, this is a good thing, because it encourages the labor force to allocate itself more efficiently. Older workers will finally be able to retire, leaving openings for younger workers. People will switch to jobs that better suit their talents. Parents will be able to spend more time with their families. Such changes don’t always make people wealthier, but they make people happier.

Well, you can’t argue with that. If someone is going to pay my bills I might decide to work less too. But then I’ll have less money to spend into the economy.

Oh well.

Man - I wish I were as enlightened as this person ( not sure if a man or woman)! All these years our country has viewed work and employment incorrectly - damn!

And so this thinking must be a part of the fundamental transformation of our country - aren't we lucky!

The NY Times could start by laying off this idiot. I'm sure she'd be much happier spending more time with her life partner, or finding a job that an idiot can credibly do (the one she has now is certainly unfulfilled in terms of expertise).

The critical question is, why will folks work less?

If it’s, as the liberals claim, because they don’t need full-time work to qualify for health insurance, and had desired all along to work less, that’s not an entirely bad thing. It reduces the output of the economy, but if an individual chooses additional leisure, or less-remunerative activities because he is no longer tied to a full-time job for insurance needs, that’s an increase in individual liberty.

But the evidence is that many people will work less in order to avoid marginally-higher earnings, and thus, avoid losing the large subsidies paid for DeathCare by the government on their behalf. In that case, some people would be working less to maximize their welfare payments.

That’s very bad, and we know that at least anecdotally, this is happening.

Exterminate all liberals and you’ll end welfare, obamacare, social security, medicaid, medicare, EPA, IRS, NEA, DOA, FCC and large variety of others, We’d be oil independent, have a strong military and be respected in the world once again, have plenty of jobs, secure borders with an immigration plan that works, men will be men, we’ll have winners and losers and the losers will work harder, schools will teach real history and what it takes to get ahead in life and the list goes on.

Find a cure for liberalism and America will prosper.

Regardless of the birdcage-liner source, there are SOME aspects of Obamacare that are beneficial to the labor force. One of them involves “job lock” and unhireability - that is, that once a person becomes ill, they can’t ever change jobs; and, that people who were sick but who no longer are become unhireable. I have been fortunate so far (NOT to be confused with the present-day version of “fortunate”) that this hasn’t happened to me, but I work or have worked with people in this situation. They are “invisible”, but there are many. Republicans who actually want to run on getting back to exactly the way things were ignore them at their peril.

I could see new businesses springing up for medical tourism. Obamacare denying you a knee replacement..make a reservation for a trip to India to have your knee replaced at a state of the art facility by US trained doctors for a reasonable cost. Need cancer treatment...book a trip to the Caribbean and a stay at the Mayo Clinic’s newest facility.

Good points.

Having “health care” tied to employment for many folks is a bad artifact of WW2 wage controls. Has caused many problems.

I plan to start a consulting business in which I will consult with the newly unemployed to advise them how to spend all their newly found, liberating free time in optimal ways. Spend time with the family? Take vacations? Engage in outdoor activities? The possibilities are boundless. So boundless that some people might be at a loss to decide what would be best. And therein lies opportunity!

Yes, but do you really think employers are going to hire people with chronic conditions, especially in this economy? Government has completely distorted the labor market so that “fixing” one thing only creates bigger problems.

Unfortunately, it would take getting back to the way things were before government put its heavy hand on the economy, and that’s too far back to even contemplate. We are stuck in a royal mess now.

Thank you! The unintended consequences of governmental actions strike again.

Few ever question the logic of having your boss provide your health care - a concept so ridiculous that it could only be the result of governmental intrusion.

More from the NYT economic genius:

"Our economy needs risk-takers in order to grow. That’s why the government creates programs to mitigate risk. For example, insuring student loans softens the risk of investing in an education. The bankruptcy system lessens the risk of starting a business".

No, but there are plenty of people overlooked by employers for all kinds of reasons and I doubt that would change based on health insurance.

I was thinking more of people with diabetes or other chronic illnesses, and I think employers steer clear of older workers, too. They think the employee may miss work often, the employer may fear running afoul of the ADA laws, or they may think the employee will leave soon due to illness or age.

Health insurance is a small part of how badly the government has screwed up the labor market, although the problems with healh insurance tied to employment are certainly a part of that.
