How Obamacare Could Unlock Job Opportunities
New York Times ^ | February 20, 2014 | By SHAILA DEWAN

--SNIP-- In February, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the Affordable Care Act would reduce employment by the equivalent of 2.5 million full-time jobs. Opponents seized on this as evidence that Obamacare is a job killer. But that’s not what the C.B.O. meant. “The estimated reduction stems almost entirely from a net decline in the amount of labor that workers choose to supply, rather than from a net drop in businesses’ demand for labor,” the report says. In other words, if people work less, it will be by choice.

It may seem counterintuitive, but from an economics perspective, this is a good thing, because it encourages the labor force to allocate itself more efficiently. Older workers will finally be able to retire, leaving openings for younger workers. People will switch to jobs that better suit their talents. Parents will be able to spend more time with their families. Such changes don’t always make people wealthier, but they make people happier.

“Such changes don’t always make people wealthier, but they make people happier.”

Well, you can’t argue with that. If someone is going to pay my bills I might decide to work less too. But then I’ll have less money to spend into the economy.

Oh well.

Man - I wish I were as enlightened as this person ( not sure if a man or woman)! All these years our country has viewed work and employment incorrectly - damn!

And so this thinking must be a part of the fundamental transformation of our country - aren't we lucky!

I see more jobs for bankruptcy attorneys, overseas healthcare providers, IRS agents, USDA bureaucrats-for food stamps.
These people would eat sh*t if 0-bama told them it was good for them, and smile.

The NY Times could start by laying off this idiot. I'm sure she'd be much happier spending more time with her life partner, or finding a job that an idiot can credibly do (the one she has now is certainly unfulfilled in terms of expertise).

The critical question is, why will folks work less?

If it’s, as the liberals claim, because they don’t need full-time work to qualify for health insurance, and had desired all along to work less, that’s not an entirely bad thing. It reduces the output of the economy, but if an individual chooses additional leisure, or less-remunerative activities because he is no longer tied to a full-time job for insurance needs, that’s an increase in individual liberty.

But the evidence is that many people will work less in order to avoid marginally-higher earnings, and thus, avoid losing the large subsidies paid for DeathCare by the government on their behalf. In that case, some people would be working less to maximize their welfare payments.

That’s very bad, and we know that at least anecdotally, this is happening.

As Ayn Rand would have noted, the only job opportunities will be for “defreezers”, who will help you draft your health care application in the proper, modern terms. :)
