WASHINGTON, DC -- U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz released the following statement regarding the crisis in Venezuela:

"As opposition protests drag into their second week in Venezuela, President Nicolas Maduro is taking a page out of the Castro playbook to violently oppress Venezuelans who are demanding an end to his disastrous rule. Activists have been detained and abused, and even shot dead in the streets. Opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez, who has emerged as a powerful voice for economic and political freedom, has been arrested and faces the summary judgment of a makeshift kangaroo court. But the perseverance of the protestors in the face of these thuggish tactics suggests there are still many who do not accept the failed socialist policies of Hugo Chavez and his hand-picked successor as inevitable. Venezuela can and should be free and prosperous, not suffering under the withering blight of violent crime, rampant inflation and shortages of basic necessities—not to mention close allegiances to Iran and Cuba.

"A year ago when Chavez died and Maduro became president in a highly-questionable election, the Obama administration missed an opportunity to support the opposition by encouraging the Organization of American States to step in and supervise a recount, opting instead for the illusory stability of the status quo. We should not miss another such opportunity to support those who would be our friends in Venezuela, and we should urge the OAS to dispatch a delegation to investigate the alleged human rights abuses of Maduro’s regime. We should press vigorously for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr. Lopez. And we should make it clear that the United States stands with those who are fighting for a brighter future in Venezuela."

Tigers stand in solidarity with loved ones in Venezuela Cabrera, Perez, Vizquel send message of support amidst worry for families' safety



"When we play here, they give us a lot of support. Right now, a lot of players give a lot of support to the people of Venezuela," Cabrera told MLB.com on Tuesday. "It's kind of hard right now. It's tough. It's a lot of people. You have to be careful with what you say."

The caution comes in part from players' visibility and from the vulnerability their families face. By sending a message together, the Venezuelan Tigers hope their visibility is a strength.

Venezuela—with its huge petroleum reserves—should be one of most prosperous countries in South America, period. But their dalliance with far-Left ideas has pretty much ruined that country—and Venezuela may be on the verge of civil war.

The biggest hindrance to Venezuela’s prosperity is “Old Europe disease”. Americans have a hard time grasping it, or rather, they see it as irrational, but many nations suffer from it.

In a nutshell, Old Europe disease is the inability to enjoy wealth and prosperity, unless you are surrounded by poverty and misery.

Compare two multi-billionaires, Bill Gates and Carlos Slim.

In his life, Bill Gates has created at least a dozen billionaires, hundreds of multimillionaires, tens of thousands of millionaires, and enriched the bottom line of millions of people. And it doesn’t bother him one bit.

In Carlos Slim’s Mexico, however, about a dozen families control almost all the wealth. If you belong to one of these families, you can work in the upper management of Slim’s corporations, and get very good pay. But just about everyone else who works for him gets minimum wage, or just a little better.

Outside of the families, Slim has probably never created even a single millionaire.

But the problem with a two tiered society of just an elite nobility and peasants, is that it tends to drive the peasants into craving revolutionary egalitarianism. Which is why socialism is such a big hit in central and South America, and keeps turning up again and again.

But the disease infects all of society. If a group of revolutionary peasants over throw the elites, just they become the new elites, and go right back to oppressing the peasants.

This is a pattern repeated endlessly in central and South America.

Venezuela used to be ruled by its wealthy elites, but they were finally overthrown by the populist pig Chavez, who with his successor has used egalitarianism to drive Venezuela into a ditch.

But the future Venezuela faces is either a return to power of the elites, or more of the current nonsense. They desperately need to learn a middle ground, that it is okay for others to have more than you, and you don’t need to put others down to make yourself feel better.
