The Brooklyn Nets are expected to sign Jason Collins to a 10-day contract later today, according to a report from ESPN.com, which would make him the first openly gay athlete in NBA history.

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com reports that Collins will meet with the Nets later today and is expected to be signed and dress for tonight’s game against the Lakers.

I think it’s insurance against being cut from the team. By delaring themselves to be gay, players in whichever sport can guarantee they can’t be cut from the team, since any move to do so by their team management will be seen as being anti-gay. It’s not a bad move for a marginal player.

I wonder if the left will call him a tea-bagger.

Is that a pejoretive or not? I’m so confused.

I’m convinced that the absolute worst nightmare of homosexuals is to wake up one day, and nobody cares about them being homosexual.

Exactly. Give 'em the Matt Foley treatment...."Well, La Dee Freakin' Da!"

..and why should any one care about this liberal propaganda?

It's totally inane to me that someone should announce to the world his/her sexual preferences like it deserves a headline.

The media in this county are totally, an aggregate of stupid asses, (like anyone here needs to be told this.)

I am sick of this hype about someone's sexuality and like they need to get a hero's medal for announcing it.

Sheesh!

When ?I was in the Army, guys who wanted out would occasionally joke that they would just say they were gay.

I always told them the would have to prove it.

None ever did.

I don’t know. For all the coverage ‘queer nation’ got during the Olympics, I don’t think that they picked up many medals. Homosexuality doesn’t make one a sports star.

All of the "straight" players should announce that they are not gay. Now that would take courage.

He signs a 10 day contract like other NBA hanger oners. Before he was out of the league when he outed himself. Now he can claimed that he played in the NBA as a gay man.

Ten days and he is gome

A 10-day contract? Now that’s confidence.

Extrapolated over an entire season, that’s less than minimum wage. He’ll have to join the cheerleader suit.

You are correct. America simply does NOT care about this issue anymore. We do, but we are, now, a very distinct minority.

Can anyone explain why a “10-day contract” was signed?

Once upon a time, men would not want to pretend to be gay...

It used to be one way to dodge the draft. I never found out how (or if) they made them prove it.

S. Smith of ESPN made a great point. This wouldn’t even be covered if he didn’t come out as gay. There is a reason why he was not in basketball and it isn’t his sexual preference. He just isn’t very good.

RE: Jason Collins to sign with Nets, become NBA’s first openly gay athlete

What’s the big deal anyway? I don’t care who you sleep with in the privacy of your bedroom. I want to know if you can play.

THAT’s ALL THAT MATTERS.

I did not watch one second of the Olympics because of all the hoopla made about the homos.
