This Couple's App Helped 10,000 Women Get Pregnant And They Say It Can Replace Birth Control Too
Business Insider ^ | 23 February 2014 | Julie Bort

Want to get pregnant? There's an app for that ... actually a few apps for that. And they are proving to be remarkably helpful.

Want to avoid pregnancy? Kindara, an iPhone app created by a husband and wife team in Boulder, Colo., promises that it can be your birth control, too, letting women get off the pill.

Kindara was released in 2012 to do a similar thing. But, unlike Glow, its founders say this app can now not only help a woman conceive, but also avoid pregnancy while allowing women to get off of hormone-based birth control like the pill, patch or ring.

Sacks answered a few questions about the app for us:

Business Insider: Did you create this app because you were having trouble starting a family?

William Sacks: We actually founded the company because we were looking for effective birth control that wasn't the pill. Kati had been on the pill for 10 years and she didn't like the side effects. She introduced me to the fertility awareness method and I was blown away by how little I understood about female fertility. I was actually outraged that I had never been taught how reproduction actually works.

Once we started tracking her fertility signs I learned all about how her body worked and also discovered an added intimacy in our relationship. We wanted to share this with other couples, so we started Kindara out of our own desire to give women and men tools that help them take control of their health, understand what's happening with their bodies and meet their fertility goals.

This doesn’t seem any different than natural family planning, and there have been apps for that for years. But I wish them luck, as it seems like a good product.

Sounds like they made an app which records the charting and observations that couples are taught in natural family planning (NFP) classes.

If more men shared his sentiment, what effect would this have on the rate of out-of-wedlock pregnancies and abortion?

Pharmacies already have, and have had, ovulation thermometers that track your cycle and show you a graph so you can see when you're fertile.

How is this different?

Something tells me that big Pharma will not stand by and allow computer software cut into profits.

I was actually outraged that I had never been taught how reproduction actually works.

Let me guess. You were to busy giggling in sex class to actually pay attention and full of your locker room "knowledge" never considered that there are these things called "books" that you can read to find out more?

This guy can take his outrage and stuff it.

I think it is great that the "app" generation is discovering this method.

Mother Theresa taught it to the poorest of the poor before there were any apps.

“Have ye never heard of the rhythm method, Mrs. O’Rourke?”

“Oh Father Flaherty. And where will I be finding a band at three o’clock in the morning?”

This is totally different.

The ovulation thermometer is used in conjunction with Natural Family Planning, which is associated with the Catholic Church.

It is rejected because of that association with the Church.

This is the same exact thing, but introduced without the catholic church attachment and association. It is associated with APPs and all t=of those trappings.

So, it’s totally different.

But it is exactly the same.

Shh. The Catholic Church is logical and its rules work for the betterment of all lives.

Don’t tell nobody.

My daughter and son-in-law use NFP. I think this app would be beneficial for those who practice this method....I just appreciate that women are taking control of their fertility without the use of chemicals that damage them and their future children!

I am a dude, and I was horrified to come to find that there are actually women out there that have no freaking clue about their own cycle.

Exactly——the Faith and Reason embedded in Catholic Theology is amazing and the “Truth” has always confirmed the correctness of it-—as St. Augustine’s Big Bang Theory (4th century) was discovered in the 1960s.

Everything the pope predicted about the objectification of women with the “birth” control pill has been proven true, even though it was highly mocked at the time: Humanae Vitae.

The Catholic Church Natural method—also prevented putting toxins into the female body, which in turn, prevented all the hormones in our drinking water.

The environmentalists/Reason are SO FAR behind the Catholic Church.

when I took NFP class, I learned more about my cycle than what they tell you in high school. You learn about temperature and mucous fluctuations and break-through bleeding, and where your cervix actually is and how it changes shape and texture during your cycle.

There is more to it than just marking a calendar, if you want to know when you are ovulating. But when you learn it, it is right on the money.

We used NFP both to conceive and to put off conception. It works both ways.
