Winter Springs, Florida - The strongest result from the random Texas telephone survey of 729 registered voters in Texas was the finding that 55% are unsure if they approve of Republican Congressman, Steve Stockman. Also, 24% are unsure if they approve of the Republican incumbent, Senator John Cornyn. In addition, 29% are unsure who they would vote for if the primary were held today.
These results come from a telephone poll conducted by Gravis Marketing between 2/10/14 and 2/12/14. Gravis Marketing is a nonpartisan research firm specializing in public opinion polls and political surveys through telephone polling. This particular poll has a margin of error of 3.6%. The telephone survey was one of the only recently polls in the Texas.
The Stockman-Cornyn contest will be decided by these undecided voters. While it seems that Cornyn currently has the lead with 43% of voters saying they would choose him if the primary were held today, there are still 29% undecided. This is more than enough voters to swing the election in favor of either candidate. In the end, this is not a situation Senator Cornyn wants to be in for long.
The Senate Minority Whip, John Cornyn, has held his seat since 2002. He is being cast as the Washington insider by his challenger, Congressman Steve Stockman – who has only been in Washington since 2013. He is likely to frame his bid for the Senate as a challenge to Beltway politics.
While Cornyn shows a 15-point lead over the challenger, this is an uncomfortable position for the incumbent. 29% of voters are unsure who they will vote for and that’s more than enough votes to keep Senator Cornyn uneasy. With Stockman having only just entered the race on December 9, 2013, this could signal uncertainty in the minds of presumed Cornyn supporters. If Stockman can keep up this pace, he may be able to sway more votes his way before the primary.
Highlights from the telephone survey include:
When asked “Do you approve or disapprove of Republican Steve Stockman?”
- 55% indicated they were unsure, 28% approved, 18% disapproved
When asked “Do you approve or disapprove of John Cornyn?”
- 24% indicated they were unsure, 49% approved, 27% disapproved
When asked, “If the election for U.S. Senate Primary were held today, would you vote for Republican Steve Stockman or Republican John Cornyn?”
- 29% indicated they were unsure, 43% Cornyn, 28% Stockman
- On party identification and ideology metrics, voters surveyed about their approval of Stockman showed a modest majority of uncertainty among Independents 54.9% and Republicans 54.2% while only 32.7% of identified Republicans indicated they approved of this candidate.
- For Cornyn, voters appeared to be more salient in their preferences with uncertainty at 23.9% among Independents and 21.9% among Republicans. 41.4% of Independents expressed disapproval while only 20.2% of Republicans disapproved.
- Support for Cornyn rests primarily in Republicans at 57.9% while 34.7% of independents expressed approval.
- Among those surveyed who identified themselves as Very Conservative, Cornyn holds a 12.3 percentage point advantage over Stockman 46.2% to 33.9%.
- Among Very Conservative voters, the uncertainty gap was significant with 21.9% expressing uncertainty about Cornyn’s candidacy and 50.6% indicating the same for Stockman.
It would seem that very conservative voters have mostly decided to back Senator Cornyn while independents make up the majority of the undecided voters. Senator Cornyn will need to sway these undecided voters while keeping the majority support he has with very conservative voters. Sen. Cornyn Reveals Not One, Not Two, but Three Public

The Texas Republican earned $65,383 in retirement benefits last year; and he amended his disclosure statement to show he's been collecting one pension since 2006.
Texas Republican John Cornyn supplemented his Senate salary with a trio of public pensions last year from his days as a Texas judge and elected official—a practice some fiscal watchdog groups have attacked as “double dipping.”
Cornyn, who is the minority whip and the No. 2 ranking Republican in the Senate, reported collecting $65,383 in public retirement benefits in 2012 in addition to his $174,000 salary as a U.S. senator. Cornyn’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
Elected to the US Senate in 2002, Cornyn is a former district judge, Texas Supreme Court justice, and state attorney general. In 2012, he collected pensions from three separate state retirement programs.
The biggest of Cornyn’s pensions—$48,807— is from the Judicial Retirement System of Texas. He served on the state Supreme Court from 1991 to 1997.
He reported another $10,132 in retirement benefits last year from the Employees Retirement System of Texas—the pension fund for state elected officials and workers. Cornyn served as Texas attorney general from 1999 to 2002.
In a series of financial-disclosure amendments that he began filing last July, Cornyn disclosed that he had actually been collecting that $10,132 annual pension as far back as 2006. He had not listed it on his original disclosure reports from 2006 to 2010.
Cornyn also reported a $6,444 retirement distribution from the Texas County and District Retirement System. He was a state district judge from 1985 to 1989, according to his official bio, when the governor appointed him presiding judge for the Fourth Administrative Judicial Region of Texas, where he oversaw judicial administration for a 22-county region.
Cornyn, 61, is not the first or only prominent Texas Republican to draw both a public pension and a public salary. In December 2011, it was revealed that Texas Gov. Rick Perry was supplementing his $150,000 governor’s salary with a state pension of more than $92,000.“I think it would be rather foolish to not access what you’ve earned,” Perry said in the midst of the 2012 presidential primary.
Cornyn, unlike Perry, is drawing his pensions and salary from different levels of government. His salary is supported by the federal government, while his pensions come from state and local government. Cornyn is up for reelection in 2014.

Too many people in the primary at this point for me to worry about who I am going to vote for. I will be voting to put John (I haven’t done anything for you lately but you know I’m a real Texan just like ya’ll) Cornyn into a run off.
I 100% agree. I rather vote FOR someone than vote AGAINST someone. Most cases it’s like paying a cannibal to eat you last.
I have no idea why some here are attacking Stockman.
Stockman is about as solid and proven conservative as there is.
He’s the Todd Aiken of the Texas congressional delegation. Easily elected in an east Texas GOP friendly district, but were he to actually defeat Cornyn in a runoff and have to run statewide, such result would actually put the seat into play for Democrats (one Democrat named Alameel is well funded). A truckload of dirt on Stockman is waiting to be dumped out, aided by a complicit media.
For those yearning to vote against Cornyn, I suggest voting for Stovall.
Stovall is a good conservative candidate, just a poor conservative candidate.
Unluckily, I have seen only 3 Stovall yard signs and all three were on back roads with minimal exposure. Luckily Stovall has picked up several Tea Party endorsements. Tried to get a sign or 2, his campaign “link” wanted $14 a piece after donating $25.
It would never happen, but if Cruz said Stovall, that would cinch the race.

The Tea Partiers should be LOOKING for these guys EARLY, and providing the resources to get them into office.
Otherwise, we get the guys who are already on someone’s payroll.
Alternatively, sometimes a successful businessman will finance his/her own run. But we’ve seen many of these go down in flames recently. Somehow, being successful enough not to need to sell out is looked down upon in the US these days...
Stovall is not dead broke, just poor compared to Cornyn. Wish his campaign was a bit better at getting him name recognition.
Stovall does seem to have his head screwed on straight as opposed to Strawman.
Just got the best “push poll” call, it asked if I liked it when Cornyn told Cruz to sit down and shut up. How the hell can anyone argue with that? Cornyn is in deep dodo, Just hope it isn’t Strawman who is #2 in the Primary, Stockman will throw the fight, count on it.
I live in a pretty large republican dominant neighborhood in central Texas. I have yet to see a Cornyn or Stockman sign. Stovall signs are everywhere.
