Former NFL wide receiver Cris Collinsworth, an analyst for NBC's Sunday Night Game of the Week, fears some school districts might choose to abolish football if concussion lawsuits trickle down to the prep level.
The underlying storyline to 4,500 former NFL players involved in a $765 million settlement with league officials is how the rampant concussion issue will impact football long term. At every level.
Alarmists point to a 10 percent decline nationally in youth football participation. Concussions were cited as the primary reason.
“All this came to light because NFL owners had information and didn't share it,” said former OU linebacker Jimbo Elrod, who played four NFL seasons, including his role as “wedge buster” on special teams. “That's why everyone is ticked off.
“With all this information coming down the pike on concussions, we've already seen football suffer. Where football is a decade or two from now I have no idea.”

My scenario:
One single state by 2020 (a non-NFL state) will vote and declare football a dangerous sport, and thus not supported at high school or college level. Dozens of families will have to move because of their son’s abilities, into one of forty-nine other states.
Within five years of that state’s vote....a dozen other states (all non-south) will carry out the same ban on any football.
By 2030...there’ll only be twelve states which allow football to be played at high school or college level. The quality of players will have gone down drastically, and a quarter of the NFL fans will have given up on the sport.
Somewhere around 2035 to 2040....the NFL will fade. The last game played? At the Super Dome in New Orleans.
Concussions can happen whether one is in sports or not. They are dangerous. One must weigh carefully what you are willing to risk when it comes to your children’s health and safety.The folks in the NFL are adults.

‘Gladiator’ Football is on its way out. It’s up to fans whether they can accept a return to football of yesteryear...

Once they start requiring networked accelerometer-equipped helmets the ‘game is all over’ if the game can’t change and keep its fan base.

There used to be a time when men played the game without eventually having brains pre-aged. Were they less manly playing the game back then?
I don’t think there is anything wrong with at least looking at how the game is played today to see if it can be made safer, but just as enjoyable.
Reissue leather helmets. Once the protection is gone, hitting with one’s head is going to hurt again.
Here in Maryland they closed my favorite swimming hole in the early 2000s over lawsuits, if everyone cant swim then I am not allowed to swim.
That place was a blast. Open water swimming is fantastic in Maryland summer heat.
It’s certainly part of the answer. Teaching proper skills, as opposed to simple brute force is another part of the solution.

I think the NFL will survive but, I think the percentage of races will change. To use your word, and all IMHO, Caucasian Moms will not allow their precious dears to play that awful game. Other minorities who see the money in the NFL will encourage their little guys to go for the gusto. Net, the percentage representation of Caucasians will decline. Just my opinion.

I wasn’t asking a rhetorical and argumentative question. I have a son who will soon be 10. He played football last fall and overall it was a good experience, but based on what I have been hearing in the news I’m thinking of not letting him play this fall. You stated that you were familiar with all the factors related to concussion and I thought this might include some information about the possible effects on kids that I had not heard about. So I was seeking your informed opinion.
If that’s true, I apologize for my reaction. But that is not what you asked.
Absolutely not. A relation plays football at the behest of his father. He suffered a concussion on the field after a hard hit. His doctor father kept him out of the game but let him play the following week. I wasn’t happy, particularly as it was after I sent him medical research documenting how the damage occurs not after a single concussion but after a 2nd one before any damage from the first heals.
Since you’re asking the question, you haven’t seen what I recall was an HBO Documentary I saw years ago on research linking Concussions, ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) and what has been shown now to be what NFL players are suffering from.

The danger is what I learned later after I sustained my non-sports-related concussion: Repetitive concussions. Too much to outline here; educate yourself. Find the documentary. What exists now on the web is a treasure trove of info that didn’t exist even a decade ago with all the additional research that has been done. THIS is why the NFL is coming under the gun and has made huge payouts to players in settlements (hush money).
There are many sports without the high risk of repetitive concussions that is what modern American Football is at its core for most of the players.
A wise father would get his boy into a different sport and later, when he’s older (teens), show him why you did it.
That stated, stupid exists even in the medical field (doctor father also playing a role as coach); don’t be subject to that ‘disease’...
