Traffic cameras could generate $18 mil for Lubbock County(Texas)

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Traffic cameras have watched Lubbock streets before, but within six months, they were gone.

That was five years ago, but the option may be back on the table. This time, it could be speeding cameras throughout Lubbock County.

Recently, Lubbock County was approached by American Traffic Solutions about installing speeding cameras in the county's school zones. That's the same company that put up Lubbock's controversial red light cameras in 2008.

But before the option is even considered, Precinct One commissioner Bill McCay tells us they're weighing every option.

"If there's something broken that needs to be fixed, then great, if its something that's not broken, then why try to fix it," McCay said.

McCay believes the first step is meeting with each district to decide if this is needed.

"We need to know and understand what each particular school district situation is," McCay said.

According to American Traffic Solutions, these cameras would come at no cost to the county. It could actually mean nearly $18 million in revenue for Lubbock County after they split ticket revenue with the company 50/50.

"It's too early to tell. I don't know. It's not about revenue, it's about public safety," Precinct Two commissioner Mark Heinrich said.

While Heinrich says it's supposed to be about safety, his opponent in the Republican Primary has questions.

"What are the motives are behind this? Whether it's really about safety, or if it's about profit for this company," John David Bruegel said.

But for now, McCay says any decision is a long way off.

"It may be great, but we're a long ways from that," McCay said.

The same company, ATS, even tried to block a vote on red light cameras.

My bet is that “what’s broken” is Lubbock County’s budget, and these bastards are not man (or woman as the case may be) enough to tell the people that they’ve pi$$ed away all the tax money and now need a “new source of revenue.” I guess Texas isn’t really as “different” as Texans would like the rest of us to believe.

Texas is the Republican Party of the States — living off of a reputation that, even if once deserved, is certainly not deserved now because the reality is pretty much antithetical to the reputation.

I bet that if you dig into this, ATS is offering someone a little cash under the table. That is what they did to get red light cameras in the city of Lubbock. Citizens were upset before the facts came to the surface and became enraged as they learned more about the cameras and successfully lobbied to have them removed. ATS is out pimping their cameras again. Who is being bought this time around?

An excellent question.

That, once again, prompts me to ask, “Who is being bought?”

“How about laying off the Texas bashing, and I’ll ease up on pointing out how California is a liberal hell-hole?”

I wasn’t bashing anyone, but here on FR Texans seem to be of the mindset that all’s well in Texas, when it isn’t. Sure, we’re farther down the socialist road here in CA than you folks are, but come on, Texas has manifold problems and yet most Texan posters want to leave us all with the impression that everything is just hunky dory there. From looking at your Congressional map, it’s just like ours. There is a slowly progressing line of neo-Marxist Mexican legislators moving northward from the Rio Grande. Here we hope that the Angles Crest keeps them from migrating northward here. In truth, there is a lot of California that’s as conservative as any place in Texas. Our big cities, like yours, are the seats of Liberal corruption. Actually, years ago, I almost ended up in Graham, but at the time it was a bridge too far for this California native.

Let’s do some basis math. You know like what they teach in sixth grade.

Here we go. There are $36,000,000 in traffic fines in one year. If the fine for a ticket is $400, how many tickets are issued in a year?
That’s right little Johnny. 90,000 tickets.

Class here is you bonus question. There are 180 days in a school year. How tickets are issued each day during the school year?
Right again Johnny, 500.

Well kids we have done the math and it does add up.

They pay anyone who has influence in approving a budget to contract with them by donating to their campaign funds. Often its select city council members or even governors in the case of Arnold Schwarznegger who received a $200,000 political donation from one of the major red light camera companies some time back. I have notes in my files about it and a whole lot of other politicians that were found to be on the take at the time. They use bothe their PACs and employees to make the donations so they can give more without it being detected.

Marked for appropriate emphasis...Follow the money!!

When they say it isn't about the money, you can believe it is ONLY about the money.

“””We have had traffic fine cameras (red light and speed) here all over this area for many years and they never got me.
And I am no Sunday School driver,”””””

They never send the ticket to “you”, the offender. They send the ticket to the owner of the vehicle. It is all about revenue and has nothing to do with law enforcement,

and I am amazed at how many suckers here get caught by those over and over here in Maryland. They are so obvious and easy to avoid but some fools here keep doing it.

They remind me of those who buy lottery tickets and play slots here, just hand their $$$ over,

The thing to watch out for is if they shorten the times of the yellow lights to make more $$$ in red light cams.

They tried that here in Montgomery County.

But if they do its easily challenged.

RE :”I would much rather the City or County not spend any money on this crap.”

Funny you should say that because others on this thread are saying its a scheme to make $$$, not spend it.

I am amazed here how the Maryland patrol cars are so sneaky, designed stealthy(jet black and small with flat lights) ,and many use unmarked cars to trap drivers, yet not a peep over that by my fellow drivers.

But easy to avoid traffic fine cams make $$$ off a few suckers (who are obviously not paying attention) and some of these people here go nuts over it, one arrested for slinging marbles at a speed cam van.

Sometimes I dont understand people.
