While car accident deaths among young people have been steadily declining over the past decade, gun deaths have remained relatively unchanged. As described in a new Center for American Progress report released Friday, if current trends continue, gun deaths will surpass car accident deaths among young people sometime in 2015.

And in other irrelevant apples vs. oranges comparison news, guns surpassed slipping on banana peels as a cause of death of widdle chill’run in the year 1541.

From the “when all else fails then lie” department.

... and lie and lie and lie and then tell everyone "everyone knows...."

When you vote for Marxists, you don’t have work.

When you don’t have work, you don’t have money.

When you don’t have money, you can’t buy fuel.

When you can’t buy fuel, you have an empty tank.

When you have an empty tank, you can’t drive your car.

When you can’t drive your car, you feel like a loser.

When you feel like a loser, well...

I’m sure they wouldn’t want to get into a look at the percentage of black gang bangers involved on both sides of the numbers, as deaths and perps.

The issue is culture, not inanimate objects, the ownership of which is Constitutionally protected.

Does this mean we should start killing more young people on the roads to get the numbers back up? What else could citing a statistic on the falling number of traffic related deaths mean?

What is the relationship between the number killed by traffic and the number killed by guns, and why is one relevant to the other? Is this a purely emotional argument?

So a drop from 12,000 to 6,000 vehicle deaths is a "a significant victory"; but a reduction from 11,000 to 6,000 gun deaths over the same period, the numbers "barely moved" and "represents an enormous failure". 50% drop = huzzahs; 45% drop = Obama abject failure. Just wow.

Wondering why they picked the age of “under 26” for their samples?

It is because they needed to expand their sample size to include gun deaths by gang members in their mid-20’s.

26 is not “youth”. 26 is an adult. 18 and under are youth.

I had finished college; held a job; gotten married; owned a home and two cars; and had children by the age of 26. I was far from unique - about average among my peers.

This is such a load of garbage.

“Do “gun deaths” include suicides? Criminals shot during crimes? Criminals shot by each other?”

You nailed it. The article is correlating all auto accident deaths with all gun related deaths whether accidents, self defense, crime related, etc. obviously the article is not reflecting apples to apples data. But, hey, would we expect anything less from liberals?

Its not fair to compare car accidents (which are ACCIDENTS) to thugs murdering each other on purpose. Everyone wants to avoid accidents, murder is intentional.

Here's your answer, from the story:

In 2010, 6,201 young people between the ages of 15 and 24 died by gunfire. Guns were a close second to the leading cause of death among this age group, car accidents, which took the lives of 7,024 young people that year.

The story also has a chart which shows deaths for "people under 26," which of course is not the same thing as people between 15 and 24.

Thank Democrats for 40+ years of welfare creating very substandard housing and living for minorities, resulting in gangs and crime. The “hood” continues to be a place where gun violence is brought on by no incentive for self-betterment thanks to an abundance of EBT cards and welfare checks. The only way to get ahead is by taking something that belongs to someone else, including a life.

Guns cause more deaths than cars? Perhaps they counted all the guns in the entire WORLD vs the U.S. cars.

I’m not buying it!

Seems it’s a “black youth” problem. Did they mention that?

“and do motor vehicle deaths include suicides as well?”

Almost certainly, and that’s almost certainly a small number, so that it can basically be ignored.

Whereas gun suicides is not a small number.

You mean all those “children” with the saggy pants and gold grills in their teeth? The one’s riding around in cars, high on drugs in the middle of the night? The ones who never finished school and never had a job? The one’s with the perpetual glaze in their eyes? The one’s who are functionally illiterate and no skills?

Yes, guns are the problem. We must do something for “the children.”
