Navy relieves USS Taylor's commander after ship ran aground (while deployed near Sochi Olympics)

NAPLES, Italy — The Navy relieved the commander of the USS Taylor on Tuesday, about two weeks after the Florida-based frigate ran aground in the Black Sea.

Cmdr. Dennis Volpe was relieved by Capt. Jim Aiken, commander of Task Force 65, which controls surface ships in the Navy’s 6th Fleet waters in the Mediterranean and Atlantic. A preliminary inquiry into the grounding resulted in a “loss of confidence” in Volpe’s ability to command, according to a 6th Fleet news release.

Volpe was temporarily reassigned to the staff of Destroyer Squadron 14 in Mayport, Fla., Taylor’s homeport. His duties as commander of the Taylor are to be assumed by Cmdr. Chris Cigna until a permanent replacement can be found, according to the release. A full investigation into the grounding is underway.

The Taylor ran aground on Feb. 12 as it attempted to moor in the Turkish port of Samsun. No one was injured in the incident, and the ship was later able to complete the maneuver without further problems. The ship remains in Samsun for damage inspection and repair, according to Cmdr. Phil Rosi, a spokesman for 6th Fleet.

The Taylor and the USS Mount Whitney, an amphibious command ship and the 6th Fleet flagship, entered the Black Sea on Feb. 4 on what the Navy said was a routine and pre-scheduled deployment to the region. The Taylor was scheduled to continue on to 5th Fleet waters in the Middle East. The Pentagon announced the deployment in January, after terrorist groups threatened to disrupt the Olympic Games in Sochi, the resort town on Russia’s Black Sea coast.

The navy used to send Captains who crashed their ship to the great lakes training center in North Chicago nicknamed Great Mistakes.

Curious that the ship ran aground while making a dock.

This has nothing to do with Obama or the dims. You ground your ship or crash your sub and you career is over.
Although apparently John McCain could crash 5 jets and still remain on active duty while the last crash was him being shot down.

How so?

You run your ship aground you will be commanding a desk.

Always been that way.

ARTIST: Gilbert and Sullivan
TITLE: The First Lord’s Song
Lyrics and Chords

[HMS Pinafore]

[Capo 3]

When I was a lad I served a term
As office boy to an attorney’s firm
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor
And I polished up the handle of the big front door
He polished up the handle of the big front door
I polished up that handle so carefully
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy
He polished up that handle so carefully
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy

/ G Bm / C D / G Bm / C D / D - /
/ G - / C G / G - / CD G /

As office boy I made such a mark
That they gave me the post of a junior clerk
I served the writs with a smile so bland
And I copied all the letters in a big round hand
He copied all the letters in a big round hand
I copied all the letters in a hand so free
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy
He copied all the letters in a hand so free
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy

In serving writs I made such a name
That an articled clerk I soon became
I wore clean collars and a brand-new suit
For the Pass Examination at the Institute
For the Pass Examination at the Institute
And that Pass Examination did so well for me
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy
That Pass Examination did so well for he
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy

Of legal knowledge I acquired such a grip
That they took me into the partnership
And that junior partnership I ween
Was the only ship that I ever had seen
Was the only ship that he ever had seen
But that kind of ship so suited me
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy
But that kind of ship so suited he
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy

I grew so rich that I was sent
By a pocket borough into Parliament
I always voted at my party’s call
And I never thought of thinking for myself at all
No, he never thought of thinking for himself at all
I thought so little, they rewarded me
By making me the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy
He thought so little, they rewarded he
By making him the Ruler of the Queen’s Navy

Now, landsmen all, whoever you may be
If you want to rise to the top of the tree
If your soul isn’t fettered to an office stool
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea
And you all may be Rulers of the Queen’s Navy
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea
And you all may be Rulers of the Queen’s Navy

The terrorists absolutely succeeded! They got their goat-humping butt buddy Obama in office didn’t they?

This commander was either not light enough in his loafers or he was an outspoken critic of his CinC. Running aground during a docking maneuver sounds like someone didn’t dredge the docking canals properly or the tide was out.

........I guess my Navy that I proudly served in overseas for 2 years + 5 years inactive duty is still holding some people ACCOUNTABLE!!!!

I wonder if there is ANY hope that our society at large will some day find its way through the WILDERNESS and resume application of accountability to lying government agency heads (Lois Lerner), cops shooting old men, pregnant women and dogs, child molesting politicians, corrupt judges and the list could go on endlessly!

Go Navy! What a message this sends to ALL Navy Captains all over the world. And, oh by the way, the vast majority of Navy Officers are outstanding patriots and totally competent. Since I was on an Admirals Staff for 2 years, I feel I can make that comment.

I think it partially made up for it with 5 years at the Hanoi Hilton.

Miracle he ever graduated the US Naval Academy if you want to go back that far. Usually aviators come from the top of the class, not the guys vying to be “Anchor Man”.

Just about every time that a ship in commission in the United States Navy runs aground, three things happen:

1. The Captain is relieved.

2. A discussion ensues on Free Republic wherein the savvy old salts explain that this is how things happen in the Navy: put your boat on the beach and you get beached permanently, period.

3. A group of ignorant posters jump in to attribute the relief to a purge, Obama’s hatred of the military, some evil conspiracy among Communists and Al Queda, or some variation on those themes.

I can only conclude that the ignorant ones remain so voluntarily, anyone who pays the least attention to such things on this forum understands how the Navy works thanks to the many Freepers who educate us daily. Thanks guys.

It’s just that way. Running a ship may or may not be the Captain’s fault but it is always his responsibility.

I served a total of 23 years in Uncle Sam's boat club. When I was in the fleet (surface navy as enlisted and then as a black shoe (boat driver)officer) if the skipper ran aground you started to scrape his name of the door to his stateroom and hope the next guy was nice. As a JO (junior officer) I wondered if it made sense to stay and become the CO if you could be beached if a JO screwed up.

Then, I went to the brown shoe Navy (Naval Aviator) and it seemed that the whole squadron could ding their planes and nothing happened to the CO. Now trying to get to the top made lots more sense!

As an aside, over in the Air Force, if anything happened to a plane (crash or bad ding) the skipper was relieved.

So the AF and the black shoe Navy are a lot in common.

Morel of this story: Go Naval Air!

........well, my support for the Navy in general is still strong, but I agree with you on the homosexual and women thing.

Namely, the upper layers of the officer corp in all services have no question hid under their desks since Obama’s Marxists arrived at the white house.

The oath I took included the words “against all enemies, foreign AND DOMESTIC.

Thank you !

And, one last thought, like Cruz standing up to Power in the Senate, at great risk, even physical risk, I’m disappointed that apparently only one officer stood up to Obama. That was the doctor whose name I forget and who went to Leavenworth.

These officers did take an oath to protect this country and its constitution against all enemies FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC............so, at what point do we start seeing some of that because IF Obama, Biden, jarrett, Pelosi and Reid are not destroying the Constitution then the oath we all took has now been made meaningless.
