Half as many Americans view Iran as the United States’ greatest enemy today as did two years ago. As a result, China now edges out Iran and North Korea atop the list.

After the top three countries, 9% of Americans mention Russia, 7% name Iraq, 5% Afghanistan, and 3% Syria.

Gallup first asked this open-ended question in 2001, and opinions have shifted over that time. In the 2001 survey—10 years after the Persian Gulf War but before the 2003 Iraq war began—Americans named Iraq as the greatest U.S. enemy by a large margin. …

Didn’t see this on the boards. Ultimately, what matters is not US perceptions of Iran but Iran’s perception of the US—and of course the relative danger of Iran, their being the only nation-state so far that wishes to use nukes offensively for the purpose of provoking a higher power into action.

Most Americans have scant awareness or knowledge of the nature of any foreign threats and would be hard pressed to locate these countries on a map. But they know all about the foibles and antics of the Kardashians, Justin Bieber, and Alex Baldwin.

It is only a matter of time before some country steps up and directly challenges us, knowing full well Obama will back down. This is already happening to a certain extent but IMO we’ll soon see a more direct, confrontational form of it.

It will be interesting to see how the country reacts to a U.S. president who backs down in the face of aggressive behavior. You don’t have to be a highly degreed, geopolitical strategic thinker to see this type of encounter coming. Its on the horizon.

If that many people have suddenly bought into the idea that Iran is now harmless, I suspect the country will likely shrug and say "Oh, well, just as long as he keeps the SSI checks and the food stamps coming."
