Armed men seize Crimea parliament and hoist Russian flag

Armed men have seized the government buildings in the capital of the Ukraine’s Crimea region and hoisted a Russian flag over a barricade.

The men occupying the parliament building in the regional capital, Simferopol, early on Thursday did not come out to voice any demands. They wore black and orange ribbons, a Russian symbol of the victory in World War II. The men also put up a sign saying “Crimea is Russia.”

They threw a flash grenade in response to a journalist’s questions. Phone calls to region’s legislature rang unanswered, and its website was down.

Breaking news also reports that Russia warns against any interference with the Russians in Crimea and that the Russian Air Force is on alert. There is little doubt Putin wants to add a successful war to his accomplishments.

Will this be limited to the predominantly Russian areas of south and east Ukraine?

As predicted and it sure didn’t take long, either. Given the competition for resources and pipeline routes , plus the longstanding Russian defense concerns, watch this expand

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov qualified his statement about non-interference by saying Russia would not interfere as long as the West observed the same rule. That still leaves Russia with plenty of wiggle room - Russia will decide what constitutes “non-interference.”

The events in Crimea combined with the Russian Armed Forces drill send to Kiev’s new government a message: do not test us.

In any case, the new rulers in Kiev rule over a deeply divided country and they lack legitimacy in half of it. Their rolling back Russian language rights at the best of Ukrainian nationalists was a disastrous mistake. Its only compounded fears among Russophones they in for bad times ahead because they backed Yanukovych.

Kiev is doing a great job of stirring up separatist sentiments without Moscow having to even meddle there.

Is there any former Soviet state that doesn’t have a majority-Russian region (filled with thieves and their descendant-beneficiaries)?

I suspect that most nationals would gladly part with the territory and be rid of them.

The EU & US broke Ukraine. They were going to have elections next year. No one was advocating splitting the country.

EU & US gave billions of dollars to the “opposition”, and lo and behold, armed neo-Nazi thugs with weapons seized power in Kiev. First things the new guys did was ban other languages (including Russian and Hungarian, note that Russia is spoken by about 30% of the population as its primary tongue) and legalize the use of Nazi symbols.

Crimea never belonged to Ukraine until Ukrainian Nikita Krushchev gave it as a gift in the interests of brotherly love, redrawing the internal Soviet administrative boundary. The idea that the EU & US could use neo-Nazi Bandera-OUN-types to seize power and the country would stay as one was fantasy and rank stupidity.

We need to stay OUT.
