Nairobi Explosive ‘same as Kampala bomb’
MONITOR.co.ug - News ^ | October 3, 2013 01:00 | by Maureen Kakah

Nairobi.

SNIPPET: “An explosive found in a Nairobi matatu (taxi) was similar to the one used in a Kampala attack and two city bombings, a court heard on Tuesday.

The object weighing 10kgs, was an improvised explosive device designed to be exploded at a target by either a suicide bomber or by remote control via a cellphone, a police officer, who presented bomb experts’ findings, said.

“The device was complete with all the components of an improvised explosive device and was designed to function to maximum destruction of property and life,” the officer said. He told the court that the device was a replica of what was used in previous terror bombings such as the Kampala one during the 2010 World Cup finals, Moi Avenue’s Assanands building blast and the Eastleigh car bombing.”

Qaeda Group Threatens to Attack World Cup
CBS NEWS.com ^ | April 7, 2009, 2:38 pm ET - Updated | Posted by Khaled Wassef
Posted on April 7, 2010 at 7:08:59 PM PDT by Cindy

SNIPPET: “The North African terror group al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has threatened to attack this summer’s World Cup games in South Africa.

“How amazing could the match United States vs. Britain be when broadcasted live on air at a stadium packed with spectators when the sound of an explosion rumbles through the stands, the whole stadium is turned upside down and the number of dead bodies are in their dozens and hundreds, Allah willing,” reads a statement the group published in a recent issue of the Jihadi online magazine Mushtaqun Lel Jannah (Longing to Paradise).”

SNIPPET: “In addition to the U.S. and U.K. teams, the teams representing France, Germany and Italy are also on the group’s list of targets.

“All those countries are part of the Zionist-Crusader campaign against Islam,” the statement says.

The group says they will use some undetectable explosive that will be able to circumvent security checkpoints at the games.”

SNIPPET: “South Africa had announced last October that its security forces had foiled an al Qaeda plot to carry out a terrorist attack during the 2010 football World Cup. According to reports published then, South Africa’s National Intelligence Agency, senior police forces and American agents jointly conducted the operation, which led to the arrest of a number of suspects linked to the group in Somalia and Mozambique working on a plot to carry out bomb attacks during the games.”

I used to have frequent discussions with a Brazilian who lived in Rio de Janeiro. She emphasized that Brazil was a third world country, with corruption, gangs running large parts of the city, ineffectual policing (they are outgunned and don't have enough ammunition)and many other features that Americans do not consider when they contemplate the popular notion of what the country is like.

Large international events sound like invitations to rampant crime.

What do you expect from such a boring game? The real action takes place off the field. They even ripped off the word football from our own game,

I've been. I've walked through the favelas with friends during carnaval. The one thing I could not talk them into doing was go up into the jungle covered mountains somewhat inland. That's when they said "Nope, there's crazy people up there..."

If you're a soccer fan in Santos, never bad mouth the Corinthians. That's a death sentence in itself.

Huh, had to laugh. A few weeks back the wife and I were discussing how well behaved our kids were. Somehow the consensus was that I should never talk to them about what I was like when I was young and single. My wife is a particularly patient and wise woman...
