LOS ANGELES (AP) - Sony Corp. says it is closing about two-thirds of its U.S. Sony Stores is part of a wide-ranging company restructuring it announced earlier this month.
It also said that 1,000 of the previously announced 5,000 job cuts would come from its Sony Electronics unit, mainly in the U.S. and Mexico. The cuts are to take place before March 2015.

More workers free of ‘job lock’
I honestly never even knew there where Sony stores, I though Sony products were sold through retailers...
Didn’t even know there was such thing as a Sony Store.
Free at last! Free at last! *SMIRK*
Great job, Bammy! You are doing a STELLAR job of doing what you promised and the idiot masses lapped up!
Just more of that there recovery we keep being told we’re in. More free time, less pay. Now that’s a good thing. Er, maybe not.
Don't forget the "liberation" of millions of square feet of retail space.
About the only advantage they had was the equipment was actually hooked up so you could check out it's operation rather than just looking at it on the shelf. And then go buy the same thing for a lot less at another store or online.
I haven’t bought anything with the Sony brand on it (not even movies, music or games) ever since they were busted installing root kits on people’s PC’s years back. They are the hidden empire that doesn’t get talked about much. They can burn, and I wanna watch while they do. I have a deep hatred for Sony and BMG (in case you didn’t pick up on it)
Sony has stores? Who knew??
Yeah what does destroying the economy matter and the loss of jobs as long as you can feel good about it, right? You have that in common with Obama.
The only Sony store in my area was about 50 miles away, and it closed several years ago.
The last thing I bought there was a refurbished Sony Walkman. Most of the stock seemed to be radio and audio equipment that was becoming obsolete.
They can easily sell such wares online.
Sony hasn’t had a real killer product in well over a decade, who needs their store?
I like their their headphones.
Yes, you are correct. And I hope you feel completely superior to me now. I’ve got a few other words for you, but I value the status of my FR account, use your imagination.
I respectfully suggest you direct your ire at Sony’s management, rather than FunkyZero. The fact that Sony’s closing these stores is Capitalism 101. It’s management’s fault the company hasn’t brought more products to the market that consumers like FunkyZero will buy.
Time to chime in here.
“...But delighting in their closing stores and ignoring the harm it will do to the economy and that people will lose their jobs is nothing to be proud of.”
I do not believe anyone is delighting in others losing their jobs.
I, as others have stated, never knew that Sony had stores.
I dislike Sony products - ever try to program a Dish remote to control a TV, a DVD or Blu-ray player and/or a amp? It’s easy to do as long as the TV, DVD or Blu-ray player and/or a amp is not Sony. They do not share their codes.
Why? Beats the crap out of me. I buy any equipment that is NOT Sony. Why should I? They make my TV/movie/music experience more difficult and less easy than other manufactures.
I spend my dollars elsewhere.
Sony stores are closing due to the lack of customer demand. They obviously had a poor business model and they are reaping the ‘non-benefit’ of their business model.
Apple is expanding their stores, Sony is closing their stores. This is wholly because of customer demand.
I used to love Sony products for years, alas the bloom went off the Sony rose for me about 10 years ago.
Let ‘em rot.
