Yanukovych reportedly declares he is Ukraine's president [will hold press conference]

Viktor Yanukovych is planning a press conference for Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. in the Russian port city of Rostov-on-Don, according to Russian news agencies.

The announcement added to a wild day in which Ukraine's overthrown leader sent a message to Ukraine in which he declares himself the legitimately elected president of the nation, despite being impeached on Feb. 22 by parliament after he fled his duties ahead of an arrest warrant that charges him with the mass murders of EuroMaidan protesters.

Aside from the murder charges involving the deaths of nearly 100 protests, Arseniy Yatseniuk -- confirmed in parliament as Ukraine's new prime minister -- accused Yanukovych of stealing as much as $70 billion from Ukraine in the last three years.

"I, Viktor Fedorovych Yanukovych, am addressing the people of Ukraine. I still believe myself to be the legitimate head of the Ukrainian state elected in a free vote by Ukrainian citizens," said the writes address obtained by Interfax and other news agencies on Feb. 27.

The Kyiv Post could not independently confirm the authenticity of the statement.

However, citing a Russian government source, Interfax news service reported that Yanukovych is being provided safe haven in Russia. "Considering that President Yanukovych has appealed to the Russian authorities to ensure his personal security, I am informing you that this request has been granted on the territory of the Russian Federation."

Yanukovych, impeached by parliament on Feb. 22 for abandonment of presidential duties and gross human rights violations, said asked Russian authorities to ensure his personal security.

Rather than addressing his alleged crimes, Yanukovych's statement cited threats against him and his allies. "Threats of reprisals are coming to me and my associates. I have to ask the authorities of the Russian Federation to ensure my personal security from extremists' actions...."

Ukraine has not done the new election thing yet, has it? What would be the response in the US if some group took over the WH and said they were the government?

Just sayin'....

Dunno. Would Obama run to Mexico and ask the Mexicans to intervene?

Someone needs to put the Ukrainian Army on alert for a Russian invasion. This could get very ugly. This is a country of 45 million, not some tiny country tucked in the corner of the former empire.

What would be the response in the US if some group took over the WH and said they were the government?

First, the Ukraine is very unlike the US, so this is a stupid analogy.

Second, no one in the Ukraine is saying "we are the government." They are saying they want new elections to establish a government.

He was impeached by their congress. I don't know what the Ukrain constitution allows, but it was not just a mob.

If that wasn't constitutional, then bring him back, arrest him on theft and corruption charges, and imprison him.

They impeached him and convicted him, so in the US he would be gone.

The question is who follows an impeached and convicted president in the USA? I assume it’s the VP, but that would cause major heartburn if the sidekick of the guy you just got rid of took over the white house. Kick out Obama and get Biden?

They kicked out Nixon and got...not vp spiro agnew...but newly installed vp Gerald Ford. I suspect someone would do something similar with Biden.

I'm old enough and have been a conservative long enough to know that there was a time when conservatives didn't cheer on people like Putin, a former KGB goon and now pseudo nationalist mountebank. I wonder how many people know of what the Soviet Communist did to Ukraine and urge those who don't to watch this documentary on youtube.

Your Putin worked for the people who did this to Ukraine. Try to watch it. I hope you're not invincibly ignorant about the communist and what they did.

He was impeached by their congress

After armed mobs had driven away all the members that supported him and were outside the parliament building waiting to see if the remaining members voted "correctly".
