When Thomas White spotted a cougar approaching his teenage son outside their home in rural Washington state last week, there was only one thing to do - hand a gun to his 11-year-old daughter.
Without a moment's hesitation, Shelby White killed the female cougar, and wildlife officials suggested that the animal may have been sick.
The mountain cat was 4 years old and weighed about 50lbs, which is about half of what an animal that age should weigh.

Eleven year old Shelby White: more of an independent, brave, strong, self-sufficient, and intelligent human being than 86% of Obama's voters. And Obama.
Oh, and she knows how to use a gun.
She ought to be on the cover of Time magazine instead of the internet geeks who SUPPOSEDLY fixed the disastrous Obamacare web site....which they didn't, but hey, memes have to be carried on, right, Time?
Uh, the girl in that picture doesn’t look eleven to me.
Cougar looked emaciated. WOnder why?
Good for her, but why did she shoot a dead cougar?
” shot dead cougar...”
Where can I get one of those?
Cougar looks to be in real bad shape, good for her to put it out of it’s misery.
Had to spent all its money on obamacare instead of food.
The girl ended the cougar’s life before the mac daddy death panel had the chance to do the same.
Ummm...how old does she look to you? She looks anywhere from 11-16, but girls/women tend to do that. They can look 16 at 11, 20 at 16, and 20 at 30. I was an 11-year-old that looked 16.
So how old do you think she is?
Global Warming. Algore told me so.
Obamacare and the economy. It hurts everyone. ;)
...and the cougar doesn’t look sick?
LOL!! No doubt true.
Well, it's always possible that the parents don't really know the age of their daughter :-)
My thoughts too.
“Uh, the girl in that picture doesnt look eleven to me.”
Perhaps you should exercise extreme caution if asked to buy a drink for a young woman.
Here is a description by Geronimo, of a cougar attack on Apache women.
“The four women who were captured at this time by the Mexicans were taken into Sonora, Mexico, where they were compelled to work for the Mexicans. After some years they escaped to the mountains and started to find our tribe. They had knives which they had stolen from the Mexicans, but they had no other weapons. They had no blankets; so at night they would make a little tepee by cutting brush with their knives, and setting them up for the walls. The top was covered over with brush. In this temporary tepee they would all sleep. One night when their camp fire was low they heard growling just outside the tepee. Francisco, the youngest woman of the party (about seventeen years of age), started to build up the fire, when a mountain lion crashed through the tepee and attacked her. The suddenness of the attack made her drop her knife, but she fought as best she could with her hand. She was no match for the lion, however; her left shoulder was crushed and partly torn away. The lion kept trying to catch her by the throat; this she prevented with her hands for a long time. He dragged her for about 300 yards, then she found her strength was failing her from loss of blood, and she called to the other women for help. The lion had been dragging her by one foot, and she had been catching hold of his legs, and of the rocks and underbrush, to delay him. Finally he stopped and stood over her. She again called her companions and they attacked him with their knives and killed him. Then they dressed her wounds and nursed her in the mountains for about a month. When she was again able to walk they resumed their journey and reached our tribe in safety.”
That cougar probably was barely able to stand; it’s good that she put it out of its misery.
Washington state outlawed hunting with dogs for the cats. Guess what happened. The cat population is exploding. Feel good liberals will get us all killed yet!
Shot a dead cougar? Why shoot a dead cougar?
So, what do you look like now?
The kitty sweatshirt was a nice touch :)
Why did she shoot a dead cougar?................
Daily Mail - Brits use correct sentence structure, where the modifier to the verb comes before the noun (object).
The girls father, Thomas White, was home at the time, but Shelby was the only one in the family with a tag - a permit to legally kill a cougar.
She does look like a high schooler.
I don’t know if that cat had been dressed or not but it does not look like it was healthy.
"And, of course, it's much less dangerous than a .243." FReepin' reporters.
“Good for her, but why did she shoot a dead cougar?”
You beat me to it :)))
shouldn’t that title be
‘She wasn’t scared a bit’: How girl ELEVEN grabbed gun and shot cougar dead ...
BLR Lightweight has many options, including .234 caliber.
No .234 — just .243 Winchester
I know there actually is a .234, but it’s an unusual caliber. I was wondering if they meant .243 Winchester, which is a popular caliber for women and youths.
The whole “waiting for a tag” thing seems rather odd.
I’d shoot any animal hunting my child, tag or no tag, and I would not delegate the task to an 11 year old.
I would, however, shoot, shovel, and shut up.
Sory Kiddo, but off to jail you go-
You have no right to use a weaponated firearm nohow noway=
SCOTUS FEB 21 2014
“The Supreme Court on Friday will vote behind closed doors to accept three Second Amendment cases that could further define how minors, and adults, are allowed to carry a gun outside of their own homes.”
They will now be subject to nasty phone calls and death threats from eco-wacko loons all over the country. Not that they will or should care.
That's a subtle distinction to expect from as uneducated a group as the press. I'm happy when a journalist correctly identifies the rare Glock or AK-47 in the news and fails to identify everything else as a "12 gauge Glock pump action fully automatic AK-47 assault rifle".
When the life of a human is in danger I don’t think any state requires you to have a tag and there would be no need to hide the kill.
That’s funny, she doesn’t look British! ;^)
Dang man they grow up quickly over there. Do they have babies when they’re nine?
“When the life of a human is in danger I dont think any state requires you to have a tag and there would be no need to hide the kill.”
I agree No. 1 is the law.
But you are incorrect re: hiding the kill. Overzealous government idiots who don’t know the law will prosecute you anyway. In fact, there was a recent story of a man attacked by a bear in MA where they charged the man for killing a bear that attacked him.
Yes, there are places where you can’t count on the law. More and more places. I don’t usually think of places like MA when I read a story about wildlife. I don’t really think of the NE when I think about the USA either to be blunt.
The article quotes a game warden who said the cougar was only 50 pounds, whereas it should be 100.
CO is thick with mountain lions. They avoid being seen by nature, so most rural CO people don’t realize that. A few rural people know the sound of their calls and when to look for them at night. Daytime sightings—usually rare—are also more frequent now.
Yes the cat does look emaciated why hasn’t been eating enough.
