Brewer's Foolish Veto
Politico Magazine ^ | February 26, 2014 | Rich Lowry

It was jarring to read the coverage of the new “anti-gay bill” passed by the Arizona Legislature and then look up the text of the instantly notorious SB 1062. The bill was roughly 998 pages shorter than much of legislation that passes in Washington, so reading it didn’t take much of a commitment. Clocking in at barely two pages, it was easy to scan for disparaging references to homosexuality, for veiled references to homosexuality, for any references to homosexuality at all.

They weren’t there. A headline from The Week declared, “There is nothing Christian about Arizona’s anti-gay bill.” It would be more accurate to say that there was nothing anti-gay about Arizona’s anti-gay bill.

The legislation consisted of minor clarifications of the state’s Religious Freedom Restoration Act, which has been on the books for 15 years and is modeled on the federal act that passed with big bipartisan majorities in the 1990s and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton.Arizona was going to lose the Super Bowl over this? Maybe so. Gov. Jan Brewer took no chances and vetoed it Wednesday. The bill was the subject of a truly awe-inspiring tsunami of poorly informed indignation.

For The New York Times editorial board, the bill was “A License to Discriminate.” It constituted “the legalizing of anti-gay prejudice,” according to a piece in U.S.News & World Report. It was, Salon scoffed, “cartoonishly bigoted.” A reference to Jim Crow was obligatory in any discussion of the bill on cable TV....

Just think how many gays were potentially saved from being lynched by Gov. Brewer’s veto!

This entire issue was poorly handled all the way around. I do not support Brewer’s veto, but she did have one good point: WTF is the legislature doing sending her bills like this when so many other issues are more important.

Clearly, from a property rights standpoint - any business should have the freedom to choose customers, vendors, employees, etc. But to lose so much of what we gained with Duck Dynasty because three bakeries don’t want to bake a queer wedding cake is just absurd. And because of that, the entire property rights issue was lost in the case. It’s not like there’s a rash of businesses being forced to take money they don’t want. Stuuuuuuuuppppppiiiiiiddddddd.

Some hills are simply not worth dying on. This one was not. The merits of the bill were good, but the timing, the PR, the politics of it was just foolish.

No man escapes when freedom fails, the best men rot in filthy jails. And those who cried,”appease appease” are hung by those they tried to please.

Completely disagree. The veto was repugnant as were the threats from all corners. You won’t think this way when it is your property rights being expropriated by the government.

America would be foolish not to regroup and try again, now with a better knowledge of the demons which will rise. Even failures are instructive when they result from attempts to do the right thing.

You’re thinking the 5 minute view, not the 5 decade view.

Well we now know that America agrees with rednecks better than anyone thought.

But we can’t be chicken (or duck) when doing the right thing. Even failures teach us how to try better the next time.

If you want to understand just how far we have gone into the
cultural marxist rabbit whole, notice that the Arizona bill vetoed by the “conservative” Republican Governor Brewer , is a minor clarification of the Arizona Religious Freedom Restoration Act, modeled after the federal act. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 was passed by a Democrat Congress and signed by Bill Clinton in his first year in office. The Religious Freedom Restoration Act passed the House by UNANIMOUS vote and had only three no votes in the US Senate. She did so because the corporate media , leftist groups, and their corporate allies lied about the bill and threatened war on the state and her campaign coffers.

The US is not a conservative country. We are a leftist corporatist regime, where the cultural Marxists own the commanding heights of culture (the media, education, many religious institutions), Corporations, and the courts.

This was an easy victory. All she had to do was sign the bill.

But supposed Conservatives are not intelligent enough to articulate why homosexuality is bad. Or they don’t have the courage to. Meanwhile demonrats can speak all day and night about why an abomination and murder are rights and choices.

If the Right can’t attack homosexuality successfully and easily, it can’t hope to attack more gray areas like finance banking economics.

If you don’t stand for God, don’t expect him to stand for you.

With due respect, I am not. You are thinking the five minute view….so desperate to get a win, with no regard for the blood lost trying to capture this totally insignficant hill.

“So ‘desperate’ to get a win” ha!

How about honoring God?

We need to push back in an orderly way to put in bulwarks against this growing problem. If anything is very visible about the modern “gay agenda” it’s that they go looking for fists to wave their nose at.

If we don’t begin trying to do this now, we will assuredly get lots more lose. Righteousness gets respected more after it is seen that people will suffer rather than lose it. You are thinking on world level; I am thinking on heaven level.

I really get irritated when people conflate their walk with God and politics. Doing something stupid in God’s name is not honoring God - but I know a lot of politicians like Todd Akin and a lot of Freepers and people like Santorum love to rush to the front of the line and gloriously take the “slings and arrows” of humiliating political defeat because like idiotic pharisees they can claim in the public square they “were honoring God.”

BULL. Nothing in my Bible says it honors God to be a dumb-ss. It says be “wise as serpents” - it says (paraphrase) be all things to all people, so that by all means you might win some. It also says those without sin can cast the first stone. How many times a day do “Christian businesses” act like snakes themselves or sell goods and services to divorcees and those having affairs and sell wedding cakes to brides who screwed a stripper at the bachlorette party?????

My point is this: this issue was purely about property rights, but it was not couched that way. Any business should have the right to refuse any customer. But any business is being idiotic to do so. They have that right, and I have the right to say so.

BUT This move did NOT honor God. No way. No how. Purely, it was idiotic. The wise thing to do would be to bake the fag cakes, take the proceeds, put it in the offering plate, and leave a trac in the icing or something. Be creative, not hateful and pharisaic.
