BOISE, Idaho TO the chief counsel of the Idaho State Legislature:
In light of the bill permitting guns on our states college and university campuses, which is likely to be approved by the state House of Representatives in the coming days, I have a matter of practical concern that I hope you can help with: When may I shoot a student?
I am a biology professor, not a lawyer, and I had never considered bringing a gun to work until now. But since many of my students are likely to be armed, I thought it would be a good idea to even the playing field.
I have had encounters with disgruntled students over the years, some of whom seemed quite upset, but I always assumed that when they reached into their backpacks they were going for a pencil. Since I carry a pen to lecture, I did not feel outgunned; and because there are no working sharpeners in the lecture hall, the most they could get off is a single point. But now that well all be packing heat, I would like legal instruction in the rules of classroom engagement.

When one opens fire in your building....
You may shoot a student when they need shooting.
...same as with anyone else.
Alternatively, you could trying “hugging it out” with said student when he shows up at your school intent upon murdering you.
Bravo to Professor Greg Hampikian for being unafraid to reveal to the whole world that he’s a clueless mental midget.
The good professor has all of the cognitive and critical thinking skills of your average seven-year-old.
I would imagine that his mommy still packs his lunch every day before he heads off to school, perhaps even cutting the crusts off of the bread in his PBJ sandwiches so that he doesn’t have to face any big-boy challenges.
To give you an idea of the kind of student this guy is dealing with, this is from the professor rating website:
” He wants all the students to be interested and exited about genetics...”
Exited about genetics?
An armed society is a polite society. Or, an armed campus has a polite employee base.
Nothing quite like brazen ignorance from the parish of academia.
When he’s trying to shoot or otherwise seriously injure you.
Next question?
Give the prof a break. He obviously has been grazing on the blue turf.
As a professor you like to think about things, right professor? A student could kill you with a pencil in about two seconds. It could be done without drawing much attention and leave no evidence that could be tied to the killer. Just do it and walk away. Think about that. :)
He needs to be fired because hes quite clearly mentally unstable.
When you're trying to prevent the student from committing a forcible felony, or grand theft, or when you are acting in lawful defense of yourself or others.
Things like that...
Your letter is a desperate cry for help, and I hope that you get the help you need if for no other reason than that future biology students at Boise State should not be subjected to learning from such a woefully ignorant instructor.
Uh....does this “Biology Prof” support abortion and euthanasia?
Dear Mr. Hampikan, asking for legislative sanction to assault and murder students is, as you intend, absurd. But you appear blind to the absurdity of posing self-defense as equivalent to murder. Furthermore your construction serves only to illustrate your state of mind, not that of others. If you were armed we would reasonably conclude you have declared your intent to murder, even though your question is an absurdity. It's the intent that makes it a criminal act, and you implicitly and explicitly assert that possession and intent go hand in hand. Fortunately you only speak for yourself. Else we should expect that even the police go unarmed. And of course, futilely, expect criminals and disgruntled madmen and drunken frat boys to always go unarmed on principle.
On the other hand reasonable law-abiding free people who go armed in preparedness for self defense don't need to ask permission for self-defense from you or the legislature. What they would appreciate is for the legislature to provide a forceful reminder to state-sponsored bigots such as yourself. This government harassment of peaceful law-abiding citizens is not tolerable and there is no lawful authority or power you and your kind may exercise to pursue such harassment.
This value is shared freely with you.
When he uses the excuse "my dog ate my homework"....?
Only if you are a cop, who is probably only one of the short-list folks the perfesser thinks should have a gun. Cops can shoot anyone for anything and claim they felt they were in danger - they can even shoot perfessers.
He is a biology professor.
Dear Professor,
You will know the moment to return fire when you see it. Until then, get lots of range time in and become proficient at the martial art of shooting.
