BOISE, Idaho — TO the chief counsel of the Idaho State Legislature:
In light of the bill permitting guns on our state’s college and university campuses, which is likely to be approved by the state House of Representatives in the coming days, I have a matter of practical concern that I hope you can help with: When may I shoot a student?
I am a biology professor, not a lawyer, and I had never considered bringing a gun to work until now. But since many of my students are likely to be armed, I thought it would be a good idea to even the playing field.
I have had encounters with disgruntled students over the years, some of whom seemed quite upset, but I always assumed that when they reached into their backpacks they were going for a pencil. Since I carry a pen to lecture, I did not feel outgunned; and because there are no working sharpeners in the lecture hall, the most they could get off is a single point. But now that we’ll all be packing heat, I would like legal instruction in the rules of classroom engagement.

With or without concealed carry laws, your disgruntled student could always be reaching for a gun inside his backpack. What makes you think that giving that student mandatory safety training, a background check with fingerprints, then issuing him a concealed weapons permit would make him more likely to shoot you?
With such poor judgement, maybe you should rethink arming yourself. You sound like a danger to yourself and others.
He doesn’t need to shoot. He should feel perfectly free to be a target, should the circumstance arise.
Oh and for the record, concealed carry on college campus is currently technically legal in Idaho. It’s against school policy and you can/will be expelled for it if you are a student.
For non-students as far as law goes the most you can be charged with is trespassing after the school finds out about the firearm, asks you to leave, and you don’t.
Yeah, because when Adam Lanza shot up a school he needed to make sure he had permission to bring the gun onto school property.

Hey, Professor A-hole, to answer your question, if you see a student shooting at unarmed students that are screaming and trying to get away, it’s okay to shoot at that student. I feel comfortable giving that advice even though I am not a lawyer.

In answer to his question, he can shoot if someone is displaying the means and intention to kill or cause grave bodily harm to him or another. So if a student pulls out a gun and starts shooting up the class room, he can shoot that student. If a student comes into his office with a knife and starts threatening to slice his grades into the professor’s internal organs, then he can shoot. If a student gets angry because he failed a test and threatens the professor, then the professor cannot shoot unless the student displays the means to carry out the threat.
If he was half as smart as he pretends to be (being a professor and all), then he would already know this stuff.
Well you can shoot them whenever you want to but you will probably get into a lot of trouble if you do.
