Obama to Russia: There will be 'costs' for Ukraine (Drudge: OBAMA WARNS RUSSIA)
AP via Drudge ^ | Mar 1, 3:36 AM EST | By JULIE PACE AP White House Correspondent

Posted on 03/01/2014 12:59:35 AM PST by F15Eagle

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is warning Russia "there will be costs" for any military maneuvers it launches in Ukraine, a move U.S. and Ukrainian officials say they believe to be already underway.

Officials say Obama may retaliate by canceling a trip to Russia this summer for an international summit and could also cut off trade discussions with Moscow. But it's unclear whether those moves will have any impact on Russia's calculus in Ukraine, which is at the center of what many see as a tug of war between East and West.

"Any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing," Obama declared Friday in a statement from the White House. Such action by Russia would represent a "profound interference" in matters that must be decided by the Ukrainian people, he said.

Separately, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel said that while he would not address specific U.S. options, "this could be a very dangerous situation if this continues in a provocative way." Asked about options in a CBS News interview, he said that "we're trying to deal with a diplomatic focus, that's the appropriate, responsible approach."

Alternate theory: this is all for show.

Remember when Obama told Medeyev (sp?) that “after the election I can be more flexibe”? And Med. replied “I stand with you”.

A guy on Levin today said he listed to the audio of this comment “at least a 200 times” and he’s sure that Med. said “I stand with you” to Obama.

i don’t believe Zer0 is an idiot. He wants Russia to succeed in taking the Ukraine.

Zer0 is a die hard commie. He withdrew missile defenses from Czechoslovaki
and Poland. Why?

Is it a coincidence that he sends Hagel to announce the U.S will no longer be a strong military presence is the world?

Remember every utterance from Zer0 is a lie.

Since the POS would not even deploy force to assist his own in Benghazi, there is no chance at all that the POS President will send a carrier taskforce into the Black Sea.

What a dufus.

Putin is laughing in his borscht.

Elections have consequences. The ONE is a virus on the world.

A long time ago, some African leader was interviewed by a reporter. He ordered atrocities against some local tribe he didn’t like, encouraging his supporters to go village to village murdering man, woman, and child. The UN protested and was preparing to issue a statement. The reporter asked the dictator if he was afraid of repercussions from UN. To this question he delivered one of the most profound truths ever uttered by a leader of men.

He said (in a thick African accent): “Da politicians go talk talk talk, but da machetes go chop, chop, chop.” Basically words are not real.

So if Obama is not intending to do something, he might as well keep his mouth shut. Putin is not afraid of words, he is a man of action and only understands force.

Of course, we might actually get somewhere if Obama actually approved the Keystone XL Pipeline and opened up all federal lands to oil drilling. And as the price of oil started to go down, Putin would suddenly realize he’s not making as much money from oil sales, and so, it might become more difficult for him to piss around in the Ukraine.

If we had had a strong leader we shouldn’t have to do anything.
Unfortunately, when adversaries smell blood they get aggressive .
We have a treaty with the Ukrainian people. It may be necessary to help them. President Clinton saw to that.

And what exactly should that do? Do you think Putin would flinch at that? Let’s have a plan.

When we also are sitting in occupation of a country on the other side of the world, for no apparent good reason or plan for victory, can we even take a moral high ground, much less threaten force?

If we had a strong leader, Putin would not have acted because why exactly?Would he fear us sending troops or engaging the Russian army? Unlikely.

When America gets involved in wars, Putin does nothing except talk, too.

I don’t want troops headed to the Ukraine.

I was bullied in school.
My father helped me cope and gave me the verbal and psychological tools to nip it in the bud.
I never once threatened a bully without following up on the solution. I do the same with my children.
If I tell them we sit in the car at a restaurant while everyone else eats to curb bad behavior, we sit in the car. If I say no computer except for school work, I stand there and make sure every key stroke is for education.
Our president makes promises he can't keep.
He neither has the intention nor the will to follow through and our enemies know this.

You are right There are historical economic and strategic reasons why Russia needs Ukraine back going back hundreds of years

Putin is a 20th century man Traditionally Russia has tried to surround itself with satellite countries to blunt an attack from the west. Both western Russia and Ukraine are excellent tank country with little natural barriers

I don't think we should do anything....

Crimeans are ethnic Russians. Ukrainians not so much. Crimea has never wanted to be part of the Ukraine. I'm not so sure they didn't invite the Russians in. Opportunities to do something there will arise.

Consequences must accrue to Putin, so what we should do is put up a massive military blockade around Cuba, don't let anything in or out until the Russian warship in Havana harbor leaves. Threaten to INVADE CUBA if Putin doesn't remove ship.

Tell the Castros they are Saddam Hussein and Cuba is Iraq. We are itching to depose you and we WILL depose you. This is our hemisphere Vladimir.

OH, I forgot, Obama is President, not Reagan.

I admit, I don’t know much about the situation over there. Was there some election recently and Putin is trying to overthrow it? I don’t think so. I believe the lawfully elected guy was run out of town in a revolution of sorts in half of the country. Does Ukraine have some kind of defense or mutual assistance pact with the Ruskies? I don’t know the answer to that. But I don’t have a feeling we have any legal standing on intervening on either side here. It is a European problem at best, let them handle it.

Obama issued a Strongly Worded Statement? There are two possible reactions among our national leaders, but which is more likely:

1. Putin is trembling in his boots at the thought of a conflict with Obama, or

2. Obama is kicking back in his loafers hoping yucky, sweaty things like conflict won't affect his golf schedule?
