Krauthammer’s Take: Obama Tells the World We Aren’t Going to Do Anything About Invasion of Ukraine
National Review Online ^ | February 28, 2014 7:08 PM | NRO staff

As reports are coming in that Russia has placed 2,000 troops in Crimea, within the borders of Ukraine, President Obama said that “the United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine.”

Charles Krauthammer responded on Special Report tonight saying, “The Ukrainians, and I think everybody, is shocked by the weakness of Obama’s statement. I find it rather staggering.”

Krauthammer thinks Obama’s statement is about “three levels removed” from actual action. He explained: Obama said “we will stand with the international community — meaning we are going to negotiate with a dozen other countries who will water down the statement — in affirming that there will be costs — meaning in making a statement not even imposing a cost, but in making a statement about imposing a cost — for any military intervention.”

“What he’s saying is we’re not really going to do anything and we’re telling the world,” Krauthammer said.

How can he not be “deeply disturbed” by this?

Did anyone really expect Obuma to help the Ukrainians? They’re white people.

There is a void in the world that was created by the election of this man and those that felt it was necessary to stay home on election day force a lousy candidate on the electorate who in the end didn't really want to win are equally as complicit in it’s creation IMO.

There, fixed your sentence for you.

Observe the lack of national insignia. This is already a war crime.

Ukraine needs our prayers. This is a very scary situation for them since Russia has no fear of the US.

There was a time he kind of set Charles’ leg a tingling a bit. I’m sure he’s now quite disappointed. Not only in Obama but in himself.

It’s none of our business

When Ukraine gave up its nukes, the US alongside the Russian Federation took the responsibility of guaranteeing the territorial integrity of Ukraine. Do we want the aftermath of the Cold War redefined?

The next stage was the signing on January 14, 1994 of the Trilateral Statement by the Presidents of Ukraine, Russia, and the United States under which Ukraine was to destroy all nuclear weapons on its territory, including strategic offensive weapons. Ukraine, Washington and Moscow reached an agreement in January that allowed for the dismantling of Ukraine's 176 Intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBMs) ahead of Kiev's formal ratification of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).[3][4] France and China provided unilateral security assurances in the form of diplomatic notes. The missiles—130 SS-18s and 46 SS-24s—carried about 1,800 nuclear warheads altogether.

Nuclear weapons and Ukraine

On December 5, 1994, Ukraine acceded to the Non-Proliferation Treaty as a non-nuclear weapon state. On that same date, the US, Russia and United Kingdom provided security assurances to Ukraine, and the START I Treaty also entered into force.

The US-Russia-Ukraine Trilateral Statement and Annex

I agree that with the kind of president we have, he better shut up altogether.

Obama and Kerry also need to shut up about it. It’s none of our business.

This is primarily a Europe problem but to say it isn’t our business is disingenuous. The US trades with Russia. It absolutely is our business.

Do we really want to send money to countries at the same time they are rolling tanks over their neighbors?

A strong response was needed from both Ukraine and the international community.

But nothing will happen because Putin has bribed and intimidated EU leaders.

In the world of tyrants and dictators who, when they’re not imprisoning and torturing their domestic opponents, are conspiring to enslave their neighbors, the question of “what will the Americans do?” is no longer a concern.

No it isn’t a war crime for a each soldier not to wear a national insignia on a uniform. It’s only very recently that US soldiers started wearing a flag on their uniform.

Are you seriously advancing the idea, that we should actually engage in a land war, with Russia, a few hundred miles from Volgograd (Stalingrad), to stop Russia from protecting its navy base at Sevastopol? And that somehow magically in this incident, McCain, Hillary, Kerry, Obama, Soros, the MSM, and the EU are all in the right?

The fact is, there really are people there who are linguistically, culturally, and emotionally Russian and they are worried sick about the pro-Nazi wing that took over control of the Maidan protests and turned them violent. We aren’t talking a few thousand, we are talking tens of millions who don’t see Russians as an enemy. In a way nobody here understands, Russians will not allow Nazis in any form to oppress Russians in Crimea or eastern Ukraine. And we have no business telling them to stay out.
