Krauthammer’s Take: Obama Tells the World We Aren’t Going to Do Anything About Invasion of Ukraine
National Review Online ^ | February 28, 2014 7:08 PM | NRO staff

As reports are coming in that Russia has placed 2,000 troops in Crimea, within the borders of Ukraine, President Obama said that “the United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine.”

Charles Krauthammer responded on Special Report tonight saying, “The Ukrainians, and I think everybody, is shocked by the weakness of Obama’s statement. I find it rather staggering.”

Krauthammer thinks Obama’s statement is about “three levels removed” from actual action. He explained: Obama said “we will stand with the international community — meaning we are going to negotiate with a dozen other countries who will water down the statement — in affirming that there will be costs — meaning in making a statement not even imposing a cost, but in making a statement about imposing a cost — for any military intervention.”

“What he’s saying is we’re not really going to do anything and we’re telling the world,” Krauthammer said.

I guess Vladimir Putin wasn’t impressed by “There will be costs”. Obama humiliates himself and America again.

We should do what the American People and Reagan did in the 80's:

1) oust the current regime in Washington DC
2) get the economy back on right footing by HUGE CUTS IN GOVERNMENT AND TAXES and letting the free market do what it does best: CREATE WEALTH,
2) Build the military back up once again to the world's strongest (weakness not strength invites war),
3) take down the NSA and other threats to American citizens
4) build up our intelligence community to make it first rate

If the Ukraine thing is still relevant after 1-4 is done...

5) with good and verified intelligence, we should covertly work with the forces of freedom in the Ukraine and discern whether eastern Ukraine wants to join Russia and whether western Ukraine doe not,
6) THEN, with actual and overwhelming force at our disposal, we should condemn Russia for threatening to invade the Ukraine and move forces into the area with full intention of defending those that want to remain free.

Sheesh, ODoofus isn’t even trying to lead from behind on this one. Gotta be listening to Joe Biden who’s been wrong on every major foreign policy issue in the last 40 years.

You may have meant to direct #38 to someone else. I said nothing about us "owing" Europe anything.

I do think, however, that it is in our own long term interest to have stable, democratic, free market, pro-Western governments across Europe. (And elsewhere, for that matter.) We waged a 40 year Cold War to save Europe. There has been great progress since the fall of the Berlin Wall. There have been problems as well, but I would not for a moment want to turn back the clock.

But something very ugly and dangerous is happening right now, and Obama continues in his by-now fully expected pattern of forfeiting the U.S. national interest by, at best, incompetent neglect, and perhaps something worse.

The isolationists will take a different view. I'm not saying that you are among them, or not, but they are about, and as wrong as ever.

you didn’t fix anything, you made an excuse and it sounds a lot like what “the good Germans” were saying back in the early 30’s..

I believe Putin told Obama how it was going to be a long time ago.

Coordinated moves to "fundamentally change the globe?"

Good catch. If anything else comes up, Obama can be found at the nearest Golf course.

Look who’s calling other people stupid! This country is in no position to be baling out people who won’t even try to clean up their own messes.

That’s nonsense! Of course he does something, he ENCOURAGES the invasion of our borders!

Vladimir has no fear of the stinky gay “turd on a stick” in the WH. He knew he was a coward the minute he originally met him. He has no respect or fear of him, nor of his new rainbow brigade gay military.

I agree but for different reasons. History shows we have intervened on the wrong side many times. The govt apparatus of this nation supplies weapons to the terrorists in Syria that kill behead kidnap innocents —and we have the chutzpah to think we support what is good? far from it.

“I hope the Ukrainians weren’t depending on us!..”

Me too. However, odongodaddy did say in his speech:

“...the Ukrainian people deserve the opportunity to determine their own future....”
From that statement, I guess he’ll be way cool with the secessionist movement that is growing like an avalanche in Texas right now.

True, but we didn’t have a stinky foreign gay guy claiming to be POTUS going around making big boy threats and drawing “lines in the sand” like he was going to be a “bad ass” and do something either. Real presidents know when to shut up and when to speak.
