Russian President Vladimir Putin has asked the countrys senators to approve sending Russian troops to Ukraine to settle the situation there. Russian MPs have said that the turmoil in Crimea could allow for such a move.
Earlier on Saturday, the speaker of the Russian State Duma Council Valentina Matvienko said that the current circumstances in Ukraine make such a move possible.
The final decision to send troops to Crimea lies with President Vladimir Putin as Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, speaker of the Russian State Duma Council Valentina Matvienko said. The current circumstances make such a move possible, she said.
Its possible in this situation, complying with a request by the Crimean government, even to bring a limited contingent of our troops to ensure the safety of the Black Sea Fleet and the Russian citizens living on Crimean territory. The decision is for the president, the chief military commander, to make, of course. But today, taking the situation into account, even that variant cant be excluded. We need to protect the people, Matvienko said.
The Russian government has so far been careful in its assessment of the new self-proclaimed Ukrainian government in Kiev. Matvienko said the reason for that was Russia counting on its Western partners, who vowed to guarantee the February 21 agreements between Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich and the opposition.
Russia did not interfere in the situation in Ukraine for a very long time and showed restraint, assuming that the Western states, which became backers of the agreements, would see that strict compliance with the deal is observed, she said.
However, after violent upheaval took place in Ukraine, the Western states did not come up with any reasonable measures or responses, Matvienko said.

Mitch McConnell and John Wayne McCornyn will block any effort to deny Putin access to this action.
I’d do it too if the US prez had warned that he would “join the international community to release a statement saying there would be costs”. The statement alone is probably going to be hilarious.
All things considered, this is the Monroe Doctrine operating in the Russian geographic sphere.
The only threat that will stop it is nuclear, I suppose. There’s no way without all out war that America could offset the proximity of the full range of Soviet forces.
And what economic sanctions, exactly, can America bring to bear against Russia that would have any impact?
I think we’re without significant options here...short of all-out war.
When John Wayne McCornyn goes to Luby’s, he orders a salad. But he doesn’t eat it. Because he’s just like you.
Next, he will ask our senators for approval. On a party line vote approval will be given so our chicken s**t presidential impostor can claim "precedent" when he invades Arizona.
This is just a message to Obama and Europe. Putin has all the power he needs to do this already.
And don’t you forget it!
The ball is in the EUs court on this one. If they offer fast track membership to Ukraine a lot of the ethnic Russians in Crimea will suddenly lose their desire to return to mother Russia. Putin has a big problem if a huge chunk of ethnic Russians them tell him to ESAD.
Does anyone seriously believe that those tactics in Kiev with the burning tire barriers etc weren't planned by some seriously trained outside help for the opposition?
You mean Putin actually has to ask permission of his legislature before committing troops—even to a so-called peacekeeping mission?
Wish we had something like that here (sarc/off)
i can’t agree at all. The ethnic Ukrainians already want what you describe. You’ve stated the status quo as it were. This is about the sizable ethnic Russian population in the Crimea and other regions as well.
Everything is going as planned.
Isn't it time for you to take a three week vacation in Hawaii?
Is there any Western economy strong enough to start even an economic war with Russia?
Obama was caspar milquetoast yesterday because that’s who he is internationally. That said, none of the options are good even if we had a leader as president.
The Crimea is mostly ethnic Russian and it contains Russia’s only warm water port. They’re not giving it up without a war.
