“The Americans are hypocrites - they helped to overthrow a foreign dictator and American lives aren’t even imperiled.

And in a country close to Russia, ethnic Russian and Russian-speaking Ukrainians lives are under real threat. And where does the West have the effrontery to tell Russia NOT to intervene to protect them?”

I have to admit that this was what I started thinking yesterday. We executed an overthrow of the Cuban communists in part to save American property and safeguard Americans living there, not to mention to protect our naval base that we still have.

This is turning into a bit more complicated situation than Putin merely invading a nation just to take it over.

From article on National Review:

http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/372298/krauthammers-take-obama-tells-world-we-arent-going-do-anything-about-invasion-ukraine

As reports are coming in that Russia has placed 2,000 troops in Crimea, within the borders of Ukraine, President Obama said that “the United States will stand with the international community in affirming that there will be costs for any military intervention in Ukraine.”

Ok, the Russians have just approved the use of force in Ukraine. Now what?

McCain spent his last years in uniform as a Pentagon liaison officer with the Senate promoting projects that would make big money for defense contractors.

McCain’s desires to get this country involved in conflicts has the potential to make big money for defense contractors.

Eisenhower warned us about that “military-industrial” complex....

This week McCain was the champion of the Putin-hating LGBT lobby demanding a veto from Jan Brewer of the law to protect religious folks from LGBT harassment and intimidation.

This is the change in America’s world standing that Obama has delivered... When he speaks... Putin and other world leaders laugh. If Reagan or Bush were President, Putin wouldn’t even consider invading Crimea.

The true danger of having a lightweight as your President is clearer than ever and the Syrian crises wasn’t the first inkling of the danger and consequences of having a weak president. Even before that there was the very painful 6 month period when Obama had to eventually make a decision about troops in Afghanistan. And don’t ever mention the Keystone XL non-decision which has been dragging on for years and years.

The U.N. Security Council will hold an urgent meeting on the crisis in Ukraine on Saturday after Russia announced plans to send armed forces into the autonomous Crimea region of the former Soviet republic.
A diplomat from Luxembourg, president of the 15-nation council this month, said the meeting would take place at 2:00 p.m. EST (1900 GMT) and was being convened at the request of Britain.

Yes he took that move off the chess board so Obama can’t look tough kicking him out.

When is the last time this has happened?

Media talking points today

This is a mostly Russian region ( ok to invade)
This region is different than any other part of country(ok to invade)
The local leaders and people are cheering in streets( ok to invade)
Happening so quickly no one could stop ( Obama not at fault)
No options for USA( not Obama fault)
UN and NATO not involved (wrong have treaty but not his fault)
All about safety of Russian troops and family( no it’s about gas pipelines and money.)

People in Western Ukraine think the West is rich and powerful.
They have just received a rude wake up call.

If they’re looking for the cavalry to come riding over the hill, forget it. They’re on their own and they’re in no position to fight Russia.

Here is what. I think Reagan would have done on Thursday when he saw 76th Shock Troops Division moving.

Today meeting with all country’s in the reaction and urging them to be voted into NATO.
All countries in region are now part of missile defense treaty.
He would have kicked out the ambassador.
Started moving forces to the region.

Reagan would have had a “Humanitarian Mission” operating out of the Sevastopol Airport, before the Russians got there, even if he had to fly them in from Germany.

And we already have a US Airbase just 60-90 minutes flying time away, in Romania.

And where does the West have the effrontery to tell Russia NOT to intervene to protect them?

How are Russian speakers in the Ukraine under threat? Are they being subjected to massacres? The only issue that has come up is Russian being demoted from being an official language. Russia is looking to annex the Crimea, and perhaps all of Ukraine. For the past hundred years, Russia's history has been one of land grabs. Nobody can say that our move against Gaddafi had anything to do with a land grab. Our policy in Libya and Ukraine is consistent - we have chosen to support the popular majority, and just as the Libyan people revolted against Gaddafi's decades of abuse, Ukraine's parliament has evicted Yanukovich by an overwhelming majority. I thought we should have let Gaddafi crush the insurrection for reasons of realpolitik, but there's no way that we were being hypocritical by toppling him via NATO airstrikes.

According to the BBC, Refat Chubarov, the head of the Crimean Tatar Majlis (assembly) says he is calling on Tatars to stay at home and not form resistance units. “Literally hours remain until catastrophe,” he said to the Gazprom-owned Russian radio station Ekho Moskvy. Tatars make up about 12 percent of Crimea’s population and have sided with the anti-Yanukovych protesters - now government - in Kiev.

Without its nukes, Russia would be just another developing country that hasn't figured out how to provide clean water to its citizens. Britain has a bigger economic output number than Russia, despite having less than half the population. Besides, Britain isn't just Britain - it's part of the ABCA group, which cumulatively has 11x Russia's GDP, despite only having 3x the population.

Remind them we have a couple of ships in the Black Sea.

And one of those ships is out of commission due to having run aground and damaging it's propeller.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3127185/posts

The other ship is an amphibious command ship. How much damage do you think that one ship (or both, if the other one were in service) could do in the face of the Russian Army...or Navy?

You don't suppose Vlad has tasked a sub to keep an eye on them, do you? I'd be willing to bet he has.

Step out of line...fire one, fire two, and two ships go to Davy Jones' Locker.

Don't think he wouldn't authorize it.

Not too mention the aortic vein-like structure of natural gas lines running thru the Ukraine...flowing nat/gas out of Russia...and rubles back in. With an unfriendly fist strangling the flow of wealth producing gas out of Russia, their finances would crash.

Why would direct military intervention be necessary? Ukraine has a long common border with 5 NATO countries, through which an unlimited amount of supplies could be trucked. If they're prepared to fight, we should be prepared to supply them.

This is Putin’s favorite pretext - a pro Moscow local leader asks for “fraternal assistance” and Moscow obliges. Today the Kremlin is doing it is not for Communist ideology but out of good fashioned national pride. And with a 70% approval rating in Russia, Putin can do whatever he wants coming off a very successful Olympics. That’s why he’s such a masterful politician.

The concern here has nothing to do with communism or Putin. It wouldn't matter if a monarchy were re-established in Russia and the Tsar enthroned. The annexation of foreign territory is the very definition of imperialism and that is what Russia doing right now.

Nice to have a lot of citizens there so that you can invade once things get ugly, I suppose. In analogous situations, America would normally be asking its citizens to evacuate.

The Ukraine has no love lost for Russia. The best we could hope is that Russians would leave the Ukraine behind. Doubt if Putin is just going to call them home though.
