Cary woman charged with financial exploitation of elderly woman in her care

Mar 01, 2014 5:21 AM CST

CARPENTERSVILLE, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A northwest suburban woman hired to be a caregiver for an elderly resident with Parkinson's disease is facing criminal charges for allegedly using the 86-year-old victim's credit cards without her permission, running up thousands of dollars in charges.

The Kane County State's Attorney's office charged Lalaine Regencia, 46, of Cary, with financial exploitation of the elderly and two counts of theft, all Class 2 felonies, Carpentersville Police Commander Timothy Bosshart told the Elgin Courier News.

Regencia surrendered Thursday night and posted $1,000 bond Friday morning on the charges, Bosshart said.

According to reports, police met with the victim's grown son and daughter on Jan. 7. The family members said they discovered Regencia had been using their mother's Chase card since April or May 2013 through last December, with a balance going from zero to close to $16,000 in that span.

Lalaine Regencia, 46, of Cary, Illinois

The Leftist media always harps about background checks of gun owners. How about state mandated background checks of cargivers?

Anyway, not to worry Lalaine Regencia can always get a job as an Obamacare 'Navigator'...sarc

The thief's defense will be that she was only following her Dear Leader's redistribution of wealth plan.

If you steal over $16,000, shouldn’t your bond be more than $1000?

The stupid adult children are at fault here. I have worked at nursing homes, with developmentally disabled people, as a substitute teacher, and Missouri required a background check each time.
This woman appears to have been independently hired by the kids. If they didn’t properly check her out, they are lucky financial exploitation was all that happened.

No. I was stupid for not monitoring. It was through an agency and background check done.

The caregiver was fingerprinted, background checked and all references checked. Sometimes you can do everything right and things go wrong. No one can prepare to be victimized by an evil person. Hopefully she will serve jail time and not do this to another person - especially an innocent senior or child. These crimes are not treated with the severity they should, but maybe they will make an example out of her.

there really comes a time when older people should reliquish their finacials to their hopefully trustworthy children.....problem today really is nobody wants to act their age...the 13 yros think their 18, the 30yros’ think of themselves as 21 again, and the 45 yros think their 30.....and the elderly think they think, react, and judge the same as when they were 45....
