"Special Operations Center Moscow police ready to form a battalion of fighters" Berkut ", have issued Russian citizenship and willing to serve in the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs" - leads the Itar-Tass news service GU MVD of Russia in Moscow.

March 1 Consulate General of Russia in Sebastropol first Russian passports issued to employees of Special Forces "Berkut". Russian citizenship six people.

The "Berkut"(‘Golden Eagle’)were disbanded by the Ukranians this year.

In short, they are the descendants of the Soviet OMON and thus very similar to their Russian OMON (the acronym now stands for Special Purpose Mobile Units, even since the militsiya was renamed politsiya and no one much liked OPON as a new name).

They even wear the same blue urban camouflage or black uniforms (although just to show that they are their own men, they wear maroon berets instead of their Russians’ black ones).

Their re-formation and the automatic granting of Russian citizenship bodes a tide of suppression of Ukrainians.

“Berkut” (Golden Eagle) was also the Russian name for the SA-1 anti-aircraft missile of the 1950’s that NATO called the Guild.

“...no one much liked OPON as a new name...”

With a little effort I bet they could get POPO for an acronym.

The new regime in Kiev probably shouldn’t have declared them to be traitors. Lots of stupid moves by them.

Sounds like the Nazi Einsatzgruppen - Mobile killing squads made up of police and retired military that perpetrated the early days of the Final Solution, where jewish prisoners dug trenches and succumbed to mass shootings. Babi Yar comes to mind.

They’re Russia’s national SWAT team. Heavily armed and assigned to special tasks, like rescuing hostages, guarding sensitive facilities and assisting in riot suppression. They can perform any task they’re called on to do.

The only neo-Nazis in this drama are in the unelected government that we brought to power by overthrowing the elected government in Ukraine.

Here’s an idea, in the current state of world affairs, this would be a good time to draw down U.S. forces to pre-WWII strength...oh wait!
