“...Lyudmila M. Pavlichenko was the top-scoring woman sniper...

And she was from the heart of the Ukraine. Names ending in “ko” are usually Ukrainian in origin.

When the German Army arrived in the Eastern Ukraine they were probably surprised to see more blue eyes and blonde hair than most German towns have per capita.

Wonder if Comrade Guthrie was praising the Red Army when they were invading Poland, the Baltics and Finland in 1939-40?

“And she was from the heart of the Ukraine. Names ending in “ko” are usually Ukrainian in origin.”

Indeed.

Pavlichenko moved to Kiev with her family at the age of fourteen, where she joined a shooting club and developed into a sharpshooter.
In June 1941, 24-year old Pavlichenko was studying history at the Kiev University when Nazi Germany began its invasion of the Soviet Union.

Pavlichenko fought for about two and a half months near Odessa, where she recorded 187 kills. When the Germans gained control of Odessa, her unit was pulled to be sent to Sevastopol on the Crimean Peninsula. In May 1942, Lieutenant Pavlichenko was cited by the Southern Army Council for killing 257 German soldiers.

“There are nearly open borders, so thousands of Russians came to cause the commotion,,,,”

Interesting,,, and why would the border between Ukraine and Russia be so open? That indicates a high level of comfort.

Any Russian takeover of Ukraine will be to control the entire length of the Dneiper - called the Nistru in Romanian. That would also give Moscow a land bridge to Transnistria whose Slavs want to be incorporated into the Motherland. A rump Ukrainian state will left to the north and the west of the Dnieper.

So by necessity in that scenario Kiev would remain under Russian control...interesting.

And she did it with a mosin nagant 91/30 in 7.62x54 russian caliber. I am a proud owner of one of these formidable weapons. It’s about as pretty as a paving brick, but it’s accurate as hell and a true deal at $140.00

“the last time these places were in the news was during 1943-44”

That’s because Hitler’ operation “Barbarossa” invaded the Soviet Union through Ukraine. Hitler wanted Oural and the Caucase more than anything.
The actual events in Ukraine mirror the situation in that region from the beginning to the end of WWII.
The western Ukrainians welcomed the nazis as “liberators”, and seconded the SS in the mass killings of Jews and Poles, while the eastern population fought bravely against the German occupation since the day one.

The big battles of Kharkov and Kursk sealed the fate of the war on the Eastern front; the end of the war was near.

I’m not a weapon specialist - in fact I don’t know much about that - but I think her sniper record is remarkable.
