RussianTroops Take Over Ukraine's Crimea Region TIM SULLIVAN and VLADIMIR ISACHENKOV
SIMFEROPOL, Ukraine (AP) Russian troops took over the strategic Crimean peninsula Saturday without firing a shot. The newly installed government in Kiev was powerless to react, and despite calls by U.S. President Barack Obama for Russia to pull back its forces, Western governments had few options to counter Russia's military moves.
Ignoring President Barack Obama's warning Friday that "there will be costs" if Russia intervenes militarily, Putin sharply raised the stakes in the conflict over Ukraine's future evoking memories of Cold War brinkmanship.

The US, NATO, the EU...no one will do anything. And I am not saying they should. But I don’t see the Ukranians offering any resistance whatsoever. Why should anyone come to their aid?
To the extent that the Ukrainians of the West are capable of pluralistic governance, they should get their own enclave.
Will Putin now lay claim to Brighton Beach?
Its all Bush’s fault!
:)
He can certainly make the linguistic argument.
If any shots get fired, it will be the people of Crimea trying to keep from getting sucked into the EU side of things.
Martin Armstrong - the smartest guy in the room in any room points out the the cycles of civil unrest and war between nations are converging. And to add to the mix, the cycle of third party political parties is rising.
He writes...
“The game is afoot. The dogs of war have been unleashed. We are entering perhaps the MOST DRAMATIC period of conflict we have ever seen since the fall of Rome. Our models are converging and that is not very good. This convergence is internal strife (civil unrest) combined with outright international war. The worst of these trends will start to make themselves know after October.”
I wouldn’t bet against him...
This isn't an Obama thing. Remember Russia invaded South Ossetia, Georgia back in 2008, and all Bush did was impotently wax indignant over it. Everyone and their mom knew he wasn't going to do crap about it, just like Obama today.
Fact is, most Americans don't care, and certainly don't want a war with a country as powerful as Russia over a nation they couldn't pick out correctly on a world map. People are sick on intervention, just look at the mass outcry when it seemed as though Obama might bomb Syria.
<<<<<<”He doesn’t have to fire a shot because the people in Crimea WANT him there. As soon as the pro-EU folks ousted the president the people in Crimea assembled their own local government which was pro-Russia and anti-EU.
If any shots get fired, it will be the people of Crimea trying to keep from getting sucked into the EU side of things”>>>>>>>>>
That’s exactly how I see the situation as well. Good post!
“NATO secretary general Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the allies will “coordinate closely” on the situation in Ukraine, which he termed “grave.””
I think this is going to do it - nothing like some serious and close coordinating to make Putin shake in his boots.
ROFL!
Followed by a package of incentives.
And will Mexico lay claim to California...etc.
>>Will Putin now lay claim to Brighton Beach?
LOL. It is a predominately Ukrainian ghetto.
This is just another page in the same old story. East Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan, when the Russians feel force is the answer, they have no problem applying all the force necessary to accomplish their goal. The West may scream and yell, but did not, or will they intervene with armed force. The Russians have always understood this. Just my opinion
Most of the Crimeans want ties to Russia. This is a good thing. We’d be better off if the US would divide.
