If this attack happened over here, we would still be in denial that Islam is a form of government that is incompatible with our form of government.

I think the Chinese know it is incompatible with the freedoms that they are allowed.

That said, I feel bad for those who are suffering because their loved ones were murdered by theses Muslims.

Long way from home is right. This is the rough equivalent of Texas separatists attacking people in Maine.

It is kind of odd for them to travel so far from home to launch an attack. And then choosing another remote section of China instead of Beijing or Shanghai.

That’s how it seemed to me. The pictures of the carnage of ordinary, largely apolitical workers returning to work after New Years are particularly disturbing to me. I’ve traveled like that and good ordinary people struggling to get by certainly don’t deserve this. I guess that is the price of Islamic fundamentalism.

Quite true. It's a hell of a lot harder to escape a killer armed with a gun than with a knife.

For some reason, righties tend to assume that only the good guys will be armed with guns.

Let's assume a dozen heavily armed and well-trained men attack a similar target in USA. Say 500 people in a confined space. Something like a large food court at lunchtime.

I have no idea how many CCWs would be tend to be present in such a crowd, although I would expect it to vary considerably by area of the country. Let's be generous and assume there are 20 CCW in the crowd.

It is reasonable to think some CCW would flee rather then return fire. Let' say 5.

That leaves 15 CCW versus 12 attackers.

The attackers are fully prepared mentally. They're likely to be armed with AR-15s as well as handguns, with as many magazines as they can carry. Quite possibly body armor as well.

The CCWs defending are suffering the effects of total surprise, they carry guns suited for concealed-carry, and they have probably no more than two backup magazines each.

Who is likely to win such a shootout?

I think the death toll in such an attack is likely to be a good deal higher than that in Kunming. Lower than if the CCWs weren't present, as they will divert some of the attention of the attackers from their killing of unarmed people, but still very high.

Guns are not magic wands that prevent evil. They're tools evil people can get hold of and use just as easily as good people can.

Now in a fully armed society, if 12 killers attacked an area with 500 random people, the majority would promptly return fire. Very different scenario.

My point is simply that a few CCWs scattered throughout a crown might be quite effective against a lone nut shooter. They're not going to work nearly as well against a concerted attack by heavily armed terrorists.
