The people of Crimea have spoken. IIRC, They actually have a different government than other parts of Ukraine. They wish to go back to Russia.
“I think Ukraine will be two, maybe three countries(?) after this is over.”
Russia needs them to be one country that they control because of the pipeline network traversing the entire country. Somebody on FR posted the pipeline map and that one graphic did indeed explain the entire affair.
Then again....how many Canadian pipelines feed our country??
Possibly but I doubt Russia will stop with retaking just Crimea. Russia has important oil and gas pipelines in the rest of Ukraine. Also she sees that territory as important fir defense purposes. And much of her food is grown there. Plus Russia would never want to see Germany (eu) gain sway there in Russia’s underbelly. (Remember WW2. ) Right or wrong , Russia will almost certainly finish the job.
“IIRC, those pipelines feed all the EU countries.”
Those pipelines to the EU are the source of Russia’s wealth and power. Now, if we drilled here and built more refineries we’d be positioned to profit handsomely from this. Drilling here and exporting would change the face of world politics more than fighting in each NE country that wants to destroy us.
There are a whole lot of Americans, mostly separated geographically from the socialists in our country who have also spoken. Do you think those in power want to permit secession today in the United States? I doubt that either side in the Ukraine wants that outcome either.
Russia provides more than half of Ukraines natural-gas needs and since 2006 has twice curtailed supplies in disputes over politics, price and late payments. Those supply cuts rattled countries across Europe that depend on the Russian pipelines that run through Ukraine.
The whole thing is Czechoslovakia 1938 all over again.
Too bad the Ukrainians do not have a Von Manstein.
It is indeed their own leadership that has produced this chaos. They will gain nothing. And it was a coup. Twenty five years of independence has gotten them nowhere because of internal fighting.
zer0:”Don’t you understand that you are making it difficult for me to be flexible? Why make this harder than it has to be?”
vlad:”I understand that you are an idiot. What’s hard about that?”
What will be America’s response to this? A stern lecture. Oh, that will set those Russians straight. Putin is going all the way to the bank on this one. He knows there are no powerful world leaders who are going to stop him and a condemnation from the UN will just be flicked away like a harmless bug.
