The people of Crimea have spoken. IIRC, They actually have a different government than other parts of Ukraine. They wish to go back to Russia.

Since gas prices are increased for virtually any reason, I went and filled up today.

YMMV

I think Ukraine will be two, maybe three countries(?) after this is over.

“I think Ukraine will be two, maybe three countries(?) after this is over.”

Russia needs them to be one country that they control because of the pipeline network traversing the entire country. Somebody on FR posted the pipeline map and that one graphic did indeed explain the entire affair.

IIRC, those pipelines feed all the EU countries.

Then again....how many Canadian pipelines feed our country??

Possibly but I doubt Russia will stop with retaking just Crimea. Russia has important oil and gas pipelines in the rest of Ukraine. Also she sees that territory as important fir defense purposes. And much of her food is grown there. Plus Russia would never want to see Germany (eu) gain sway there in Russia’s underbelly. (Remember WW2. ) Right or wrong , Russia will almost certainly finish the job.

“IIRC, those pipelines feed all the EU countries.”

Those pipelines to the EU are the source of Russia’s wealth and power. Now, if we drilled here and built more refineries we’d be positioned to profit handsomely from this. Drilling here and exporting would change the face of world politics more than fighting in each NE country that wants to destroy us.

There are a whole lot of Americans, mostly separated geographically from the socialists in our country who have also spoken. Do you think those in power want to permit secession today in the United States? I doubt that either side in the Ukraine wants that outcome either.

I was going to post that same graphic. I'll bet Europe hopes Vlad doesn't shut down those pipelines.

Russia provides more than half of Ukraine’s natural-gas needs and since 2006 has twice curtailed supplies in disputes over politics, price and late payments. Those supply cuts rattled countries across Europe that depend on the Russian pipelines that run through Ukraine.

False. Russia has several other pipelines: one in the Baltics, another theroug Poland, a third throuh the Balkan countries and a forth to Turkey. Only 33% of Russian gaz pass through Ukraine, which depends on it for 80% of its energy. Anger Putin more, and he will shut down the gaz, leaving Ukraine in the dark and stand still.

It is indeed their own leadership that has produced this chaos. They will gain nothing. And it was a coup. Twenty five years of independence has gotten them nowhere because of internal fighting.

What will be America’s response to this? A stern lecture. Oh, that will set those Russians straight. Putin is going all the way to the bank on this one. He knows there are no powerful world leaders who are going to stop him and a condemnation from the UN will just be flicked away like a harmless bug.

Excellent observation. Anyone else remember too, that Syria was the proposed route for the new Gulf-sourced NG pipeline to Western Europe?. Putey played hard to keep that under his thumb too. This man knows his priorities.

See? That's just the kind of in-depth analysis that's lacking in our Men Seeking Men media.

Our media would just assume that people know you dig trenches on land and not in water.

I just wish our politicians could figure that out.

If this is true, and it probably is. Our wonderful NSA and CIA really dropped the intel ball on this. Of course they were monitoring conservative Americans and our allies.

Lol! Good one! My Russian friend says Putin’s popularity is soaring in Russia after he got parliament’s permission to use force to protect Russians from violence in Ukraine. Also, there is no money to pay Ukr pensions so support for protestors will crumble.

Russia has important oil and gas pipelines in the rest of Ukraine.

Because so much of the EU is dependent on that natural gas, anyone who inflicts serious damage on those pipelines will incur the wrath of the EU and Russia alike. Not a good place to be in.

What was the EU dependent upon before the Russian gas pipeline? Lowering their energy consumption is going Green. IOW, I’m saying the protagonists should get the blame for the EU’s energy woes. The Greens and the Communists have been working together to make Europe dependent on Russian gas since at least the ‘80s.
