U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson links strict gun control laws in Chicago with a high murder rate
Milwaukee J-S ^ | 02 mar 2014

Citing the number of school shootings since Sandy Hook, a woman asked U.S. Sen. Ron Johnson at one of his town hall meetings why he doesn’t support expanded background checks for gun purchases.

The Wisconsin Republican responded by connecting strict gun control with a high rate of homicide.

"I’ll repeat it: I think we have enough gun laws on the books; we should enforce those," Johnson told his audience in Appleton on Feb. 18, 2014.

"But, if you really take a look -- again, look at the facts. The most stringent gun laws on the books are in places like Chicago, (which) has the highest murder rate.

Criminals don’t go through background checks when obtaining a firearm. They either steal a firearm or purchase one on the street. As lawbreakers they ignore any gun law.

I have another opinion. While I definately think an armed society is a polite society, the obvious elephant in the room is not being properly viewed.

Chicago and many places like it do have the worst crime rates and gun control laws in the nation, but lets look at Vermont and other similar places where gun control and crime rates are at their lowest.

I say the the real difference between Chicago and Montpellier is not their level of gun control. It is their number of available criminals.

I'm with you. It's easy to say "concealed carry reduces crime," and I'm sure it does, but then here's always the outlier that spoils the meme.

Michigan has very good "shall issue" CPL laws and no restrictive handgun magazine limits or "approved for sale" lists, but Detroit and Flint continue to rank #1 in crime rankings for their respective city size categories.

(Of course, there's the oft repeated quote by the Detroit Police Chief...)

Knowledge is power! Word of caution, crime is not counted accurately. More of our governments fuzzy math tricks. It is Hierarchical Counted, only the most serious crime is counted if there were actually 4 crimes committed at the time. Kidnap, rape, rob then kill a person, only the murder counts. Rest flushed down the toilet.

Recidivism
http://www.bjs.gov/index.cfm?ty=tp&tid=17
These offenders had accumulated 4.1 million arrest charges before their most recent imprisonment and another 744,000 charges within 3 years of release.

Older study, but invaluable info. https://www.ncjrs.gov/txtfiles/ppvsp91.txt
Keep in mind the sampling was just 45%, they originally committed 25,900, when placed early released under ‘community’ supervision for parole and probation they then committed another 74,400 new crimes. That folks adds up to 100,300 crimes, and many times more than in victims. As there are multiple people affected when a child is raped or a person murdered.

This older study gives you a big idea of just how many additional crimes are committed by early released of criminals to parole and probation cause. JUST IMAGINE IF YOU HAD THE INFO ON 100% of the total crimes, not just 45%! In 1991, 45% of State prisoners were persons who, at the time they committed their offense, were under conditional supervision in the community—either on probation or on parole. They then committed an additional 74,400 new crimes. Their original crimes add up to 25,900. The NEW crimes FAR out ceded their REPEAT CRIMES.

Probation & Parolee’s

Based on the offense that brought them to prison, the 162,000 probation violators committed at least 6,400 murders, 7,400 rapes, 10,400 assaults, and 17,000 obberies, while under supervision in the community an average of 17 months.

Based on the offense that brought parolees back to prison, these 156,000 offenders committed at least 6,800 murders, 5,500 rapes, 8,800 assaults, and 22,500 robberies, while under supervision in the community an average of 13 months.

Politifact screws up on the changes in Missouri gun laws, as shown by John Lott vs Think Progress’ article on background checks and murder totals.

That is like Memphis, we live roughly half hr outside of it in next county, our county is quite, most problems are hunters are on posted land or DUI’s. Memphis crime occupies the first 15 mins of our news. Memphis is the Crime Capitol of TN and has the worst schools in the state, Nashville has less crime and it is a bigger county. The crime in Memphis is mainly inside the city limits, not in the county where there are many ‘tiny’ cities, which have their own government and PD. Takes a Memphis PD officer up to 30 mins to show for a shooting unless it is a Officer Down situation. Most of it is in primarily black neighborhoods to boot. And your GPS does not KNOW those bad areas.

The Memphis Penal Farm is a 11 month 29 day facility recidivism rate is 85%, serve rate 90 days.

In Tipton Co our taxes are lower, car ins, property ins, even the total cost of living is lower.

Lead poisoning. They will need a blue ribbon commission and another government agency.

Gun control is direct result of the unintended consequence of liberalism.

Nothing more, nothing less.

I will always remember the root source of that good old American word - “Outlaw”. One who lives OUTside the confines of LAW - OUTLAW.

And our lawyer dominated society believes that just one more law, one more police organization, one more political speech, will find the magical cure and gun based crime will disappear.

The first third of my adult life, 23 - 43, was spent in a world where ineffectual leadership, poorly developed procedures, and political posturing lead to death of associates, students, and close friends - the US military. I have absolute proof that lawyers (rules of engagement -ROEs), organizations (newly formed high headquarters well in the rear - REMFs) and politicians running for, in, and out of office will not keep me and my friends alive.

Luckily, most of the rest of our society has never had to learn that lesson, as proven by the demands for tougher gun laws and other just hysterical dreams.

It goes a LOT deeper than that, but that is, essentially, true.
