He made it clear that mere words and "the President's vague threats" are not enough because mere "appeals to international norms" hold no sway over Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Moreoever, Cruz said international norms mean even less than usual to Putin "when they run counter to his goal of re-establishing Soviet-style regional hegemony over unfortunate states like Georgia and Ukraine who have the temerity to want a more free, prosperous future for their people."
Cruz said the U.S. must suspend Russian membership in the G8. If that doesn't give Putin pause, he added, suspensions from "the World Trade Organization and even the United Nations Security Council" should be pursued.

What gives the U.S. the authority to suspend Russian membership?
Germany won’t allow it.
It’s true that Obama’s clueless weakness is damaging our reputation. But, I hate to say it, the trouble began when the terrorists George Soros had funded overthrew the President of Ukraine.
No, things were not all perfect in that government. But unfortunately Soros is a big-time troublemaker, and it won’t help to anger Putin further. Russia has a stake in Ukraine, too, I’m afraid. And it would serve no purpose to draw us into the fight.
I’m afraid Cruz doesn’t have the slightest idea what he’s talking about here.
How’s about the US leaving the G8 and the UN. In truth it won’t make any difference.

Agreed- I totally get why Putin is doing what he is doing. Half of Ukraine would go with Russia in a heartbeat. Half would’t. For the life of me, I still don’t know what our PINO was doing in Libya and Syria overthrowing Sovereign govts. and siding with muslim radicals at the behest of the Chaos mongers. Nothing at all to do with American interests.
I just don’t think it’s a good idea for the U.S. to make Putin mad. We are not the America we used to be.
If there is evidence that Soros funded the coup, then Putin could take it up with the International Criminal Court in the Hague. And it has to be specific targeted funding because Soros and his ring fund lots of things.
If Putin would resort to prosecuting Soros, he would have deep and widespread support in the USA and the world because Soros is hated everywhere.
Putin would be well-justified in protecting his bases along the Crimean just as the US is for Guantanamo. But beyond that he should voice his opinion and condemnation to the UN and refrain from acting as Hitler did with the Sudentenland.
But Putin has just botched the worldwide support and respect he gained for Russian values with his anti-homosexual stand at Sochi because people everywhere in the world are against normalizing homosexuality. Putin is not as smart as he thinks he is.
1) oust the current regime in Washington DC
2) get the economy back on right footing by HUGE CUTS IN GOVERNMENT AND TAXES and letting the free market do what it does best: CREATE WEALTH,
3) Build the military back up once again to the world's strongest (weakness not strength invites war),
4) take down the NSA and other threats to American citizens
5) build up our intelligence community to make it first rate
Whatever aggressor-country hotspots including the Ukraine are relevant after 1-5 is done...
6) with good and verified intelligence, we should covertly work with the forces of freedom in the threatened country. In the case of the Ukraine if it’s still relevant, discern whether eastern Ukraine wants to join Russia and whether western Ukraine does not,
7) THEN, with actual and overwhelming force at our disposal, we should condemn the aggressor (Russia in this case) for threatening to invade the threatened country (Ukraine in this case) and move forces into the area with full intention of defending those that want to remain free,
8) we should seek diplomacy with the aggressor nation on the basis of our strength not weakness and any treaties or agreements should be based on “trust but verify.”
Note: We should NOT do what Bush did and start invading countries to force them to become democratic. That is NOT what America is here for. But we ARE here to help ourselves and others defend freedom against unwanted aggression and oppression.
Cruz is an idiot. The Crimea is not Georgia. Please pick up a history book and a map, Senator. Sheesh.
