U.S. foreign policy comes home to roost with Russia’s action in Ukraine
Washington Post ^ | March 1, 2014 | By David J. Kramer

President Obama faces the gravest challenge of his presidency in figuring out how to respond to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. How he responds will define his two terms in office, as well as determine the future of Ukraine, Russia and U.S. standing in the world. After all, if the authoritarian tyrant Vladimir Putin is allowed to get away with his unprovoked attack against his neighbor, a blatant violation of that country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, then U.S. credibility, already damaged by Obama’s poor handling of Syria, will be down to zero. Allies won’t believe in us, enemies won’t fear us and the world will be a much more dangerous place. The White House statement issued late Saturday afternoon expressing “deep concern over Russia’s clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty” was woefully inadequate.

“Question for everyone who wants us to “do something”. Just what do you propose?”

Pining, you are dead on correct.

I am hearing nothing but knee-jerk criticism of Zero.

Has the Right forgotten when he wanted to get tough with Syria, most on the Right wanted to back off and let them figure it out? Why not in this case too? Are we actuallly threatened?

Has anyone considered that Putin may actually have legitimate reasons for protecting his interests against an illegitmate neighbor? Is the 1994 accord still valid, given the government is gone? Hasn’t the US done the same thing in Iraq and Afghanistan? Did we go to war in Kuwait to protect outr oil supply, as Putin is for their pipelines here?

Yes, 0bama is the worst President and an a-clown, but this is not about him.

What does a broke nation do at this point?

Kruschev transferred Crimea to Ukraine in 1954. Maybe a uniquely Soviet way to apologize for Stalin’s BS, and of course, Nikita was Ukrainian himself.

Not true. Khrushchev was an ethnic Russian, born near the Russian border with Ukraine. But he did serve as boss of Ukraine, under Stalin, and this empty gesture at the time (Moscow was still boss, regardless of which Soviet Socialist Republic it belonged to), was to win over the Ukrainians that he needed to win his power struggle after Stalin's death.

I tend to agree with your sentiment.

Frankly I think the best thing for Obama to do right now is to go golfing. He can’t do any damage that way.

Perhaps Poland wants the eastern part of their nation back?

Keep your eyes on China.

Indeed. China and Japan are watching Obama's inaction with great interest. Japan has to be worried that Chinese moves against its' territory will be ignored by Obama's government. Same with lesser asian nations near China. Russia is making expansionist moves; the Chinese will certainly follow.

“Putin knew that Barry’s idea of flexibility cannot be discussed in polite company.”

Yes the election is over, Obama can be very flexible now.

Wouldn’t be the first, nor the last agreement to be broken.

Next time we tell a country to destroy their nuclear weapons and we will make sure no one attacks them, they will laugh in our faces and tell us to get lost.

Interesting! The Poles and the other countries may be worried that they are next on the menu of the Russian bear. Before the Russians pick them off one after the other, it would be better strategy to cooperate and join together. Ukraine is a large country and would be good to keep on their side.

They definitely can't depend on Western Europe or Uncle Sam.

Poland will occupy Lwow and other former Polish territory before letting the Russians get it.

Probably the second worst president in this Republic’s history.
