Vladimir Putin has spoken to Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, and said that the "threat of violence from ultranationalists" forced him to intervene. In a sign of Putin's reach, Ukraine's head of navy has defected - and been charged with treason. All the latest news from Ukraine here

My fear is obama is reading all the “weak” talk and he’ll go “all in” to prove how tough he is. Maybe this will be the breaking point for the Joint Chiefs and/or other military higher ups.
Historically there is no record of these kind of events ever ending without tremendous loss, and here we stand with friggen spoiled hippies running our own village!
God help us!
This is simply Kerry’s attempt to seem significant....all was already stated at the UN meeting by Russian Representatives who spoke there.
Even though the UN is powerless....when the International Leaders do speak there it pays to hear what each nation states when it comes to International Crisis as in Ukraine.
Kerry’s trying to take credit where it was already clearly stated at the UN meeting about Ukraine...as if it’s new news.
Of course, Putin fails to say that he himself is an ultranationalist. It’s okay as long as it’s Russian “exceptionalism”.
I for one no longer am surprised, or angry with what Obama does or doesn't do.....we've known his agenda from the start...I'm more angry and bitter toward our congress...they ALL need to go! Every last one of them!
Amen!
The Rocky 4 comment slayed me. What next? Batman?
Utranationalists...aka Tea Party. Obama must be jealous.
Putin and his old bosses from USSR murdered and deported millions of the Turks and Ukraine and German populations in Crimea / east Ukraine and shipped in loyal Russians .
These Russians are about as native as the Boa is to the everglades and just as welcome and dangerous.
What he is doing isn't comparable to the Nazi invasions. No one has been killed. And, the majority in the areas he is entering are pro-Russian. Protecting Crimea is vital to Russian national interests.
It's only if Putin moves to takeover all of Ukraine that he'd be in the Hitler category.
For eight glorious years in the 1980s, not one Russian soldier dared enter Ukraine...
Oh wait.
C'mon there's a huge difference between the Russians meddling in Nicaragua, El Salvador and Grenada and them meddling in Ukraine, a country that's not only on their border, but which was part of the Russian Empire for 350 years from 1654 to 1991 and which still contains 8 million ethnic Russians (20% of the population) plus vast numbers of Ukrainians who identify culturally with Russia.
And what was our meddling in Georgia?
Even then he wouldn't be Hitler. Ukraine was an integral part of Russia for 350 years starting in 1654. Pretending that Russia doesn't have significant historical, economic, ethnic, and security interests in control over Ukraine is silly. I hope Putin doesn't invade Ukraine proper -- I think that would be catastrophic for both countries -- but we're not looking at Hitler II.
I would LOVE to know who leaked this conversation of Nuland

Took a look at that one, and the Ukraine situation is way down the page (6'th group down) below the Oscars and other stuff. They also appear to have a very pro-DNC spin to them.
A mistake. I'm not sure why it's still important for the US to arm and promote enemies on Russia's doorstep. We have no strategic interests in Georgia other than aggravating and "containing" Russia, which makes no sense given that Russia no longer plausibly poses a risk of world domination. Containment may have made sense in the 1950s -- it's pointless in 2014. While it's unfortunate that powerful countries pick on weaker neighbors, it's a fact of life and will be forever.
The State Department needs an enema to clear out all the crap still trying to fight the Cold War.
