Skip to comments.Stephanopoulos Grills Kerry: Is There Any Indication Putin Is Listening to Obama At All?
Posted on 03/02/2014 11:13:56 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet
On This Week With George Stephanopoulos Sunday morning, the titular host pressed Secretary of State John Kerry for specifics as to the United States planned responses to Russias invasion of the Crimean peninsula, and whether President Barack Obama had the ability to execute repercussions against Russia. All those violations, Stephanopoulos said, whats the penalty for what Russias already done?
The United States is currently considering all options, Kerry said. This really puts into question Russias role in the world They are inviting the possibility of very serious repercussions, on trade, on investment, on asset freeze, on visa bans, on the potential of actions by the global community.
Kerry called upon Congress to pass economic aid for Ukraine, and Stephanopoulos asked if the US was considering economic sanctions against Russia, in addition to Ukrainian aid. It may well come that we will have to engage in that kind of activity, Kerry said.
Kerry added that Russia was jeopardizing its membership in the G8 and G20. You cannot behave this way in the 21st Century, and sit around the table with the normal entities and pretend that life is as usual, he said. But we believe that there is an alternative. We call on Russia to engage with the government of Ukraine. We are prepared to work very closely with Russia in order to address the very legitimate concerns that exist.
Do you have any indication at all that President Putin is taking heed of what President Obama is saying? Stephanopoulos asked, in reference to the fruitless phone call yesterday between Obama and Putin.
Well, they just had the conservation yesterday, Kerry said. Were going to continue to engage diplomatically. This is a time for diplomacy, in order to steer this away from an increase of tension and the level of the crisis.

Lurch & Obozo = won’t end well
Putin is laughing at how well his plan is going.
Listening enough to laugh at those two boneheaded clowns.
Of course hes not listening. Why would he?
Obama is just another world leader, no different to the leaders of Denmark and Norway. That’s how Russia views him and that’s how he views himself.
Key consequences of Obama’s weakness:
1) US’ word means nothing. Our treaties are void.
2) China is emboldened to seize the Senkaku Islands from Japan. The US would do nothing beyond sending ketchup face on the Sunday shows.
3) Poor countries increasingly see Russia as the world’s power broker
4) Arms race in Europe, and a growing climate of fear
Of course he listens. He listened very carefully when Obama announced we weren’t the world’s policeman, and when Obama told him he’d have more leeway to cut our missles after the election. And I’m sure he listened very well when Obama’s administration announced they are cutting our military to pre WWII levels.
Now if Stephanopoulos had asked if Putin RESPECTS Obama or fears him, that would probably be a No.
Obama reeks of incompetence. Putin is well aware of it.
I think Putin has more important things to do than listen to that Kenyan impostor. Remember, every minute spent listening to him...is gone and you can’t get it back! ;)

Today the majority of the Ukrainian armed forces deployed in Crimea passed to the side of the authorities of the Crimean autonomous republic. The transition was absolutely peaceful, without a single shot fired either by the military or by the forces of self-defense.
Newly appointed by Kiev, the Navy Chief rear admiral Denis Berezovsky has sworn allegiance to the people of Crimea.
Ukraines Navy flagship, the Hetman Sahaidachny frigate, has refused to follow orders from Kiev, and come over to Russias side in the port of Sevastopol, flying St.Andrew, the Russian naval flag.
Five top military, security commanders take oath to Crimea:
The head of the Security Service of Crimea Petyor Zima, Chief of Department of Internal Affairs in the Crimea Sergey Abisov, the head of Service for Emergency Situations Sergei Shakhov and acting Chief of the Border Guards of Crimea Victor Melnichenko all took an oath of allegiance to the people of Crimea.
Steffy grills Kerry ? Would that be with or without kneepads ?
Not taking that bet.
It’s kinda funny, I remember several years ago discussing with another FReeper the subject of Obama’s ability to be easily rattled, and his naive views on foreign affairs. The FReeper (I forget his name) commented that I could be sure that Moscow and Beijing had noticed the same thing, and were including that in their intel profiles and adjusting accordingly.
It would seem that FReeper’s observations are coming true before our very eyes. Though I do not share the love for Putin some folks around here have, there’s no denying he is a force. He has also consistently outgamed the U.S. in the past few years, and seems to have little fear of U.S. objections over his actions. To paraphrase an old cliche, one side is playing checkers, while the other is playing a very shrewd game of chess.
Does passionately wanting someone else to go die for the Crimea count? We have lots of those.
typical. I think I prefer the idea of stepping back and allowing things to... develop. Not just in the Ukraine mind you.
“Well, they just had the conservation yesterday,” Kerry said. Really, the word “conversation” was mispelled in your paste-up? Makes sense, given the parameters of quoting, Secretary of State John F. Kerry.
I didn’t believe it was yours, brother.
Not in the least I think.
Steffie is not a jounalist. He majored in Orthodox Greek Divinity before becoming Bill Clinton’s lead rear end coverer. I refuse to watch him as he is a Democrat strategist first and foremost.
Better yet, who would you rather have walking next to you if in a dark alley?
Who in the media ISN’T a Democrat strategist ?
I think Obama WANTS Putin to do this. I think that’s what he meant by being “more flexible” after the election. I don’t think he gives a RATS ASS about ANYTHING other than America been WEAKENED......oh and GOLF and VACATIONING with his friends!!
Kerry called upon Congress to pass economic aid for Ukraine,
Stop it! Stop it! The billions or trillions of US taxpayers’ dollars that have been given to other countries over the past few decades has NOT endeared those countries to ‘like’ the US. And, in most cases IMO, those countries despise the US.
If Congress wants to help reduce the deficit/debt, they should begin by severely cutting funds given as foreign aid and pass legislation requiring Congressional approval before any is given. ....Other countries don’t respect the US anymore, but love the liberals who give them money.
Boy Putin is in trouble now, mac daddy just received a carton of red pens and he is willing to use the entire carton drawing red lines for months to show how angry he really really is and that Putin had better listen.
So you think that Kerry and his boss want countries to like us?
Do you suppose he decided now is the time after his own NSA learned some things about how bad things really are in America? I have given up on our dumbed-down press. They are either inept, corrupt or drugged-up. Even the comediennes are protecting the unknown consequences to what amounts to a revolution without batting an eye. Honest historians will have a lot to say about our time, that is, if the world lasts.
>> Though I do not share the love for Putin some folks around here have,
I suppose you’re being facetious.
> Does passionately wanting someone else to go die for the Crimea count? We have lots of those.
Perfect timing to test out our new pink berets.
Not really, no. I have been flamed and insulted by more than one person here for criticizing Putin. He’s the cat’s pajamas to a few folks around here, and I’m apparently (among other things) a liberal spy or something for pointing out his failings, and clinging to the somehow absurd notion that Putin is not our buddy just because he does a couple things that appeal to us (standing up to gay activists, etc.).
Obama is nothing but a mouse that is huffing helium.
Hopefully, these abject displays of weakness will ensure that the communist Democrats wander around in the wilderness for the next 20 years.
Ya gots to know even Teresa kicks Kerrys ass regularly.
Yes, I understand that, but what concrete consequences are there for Russia that Russia actually gives a damn about?
Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, All in the valley of Death Rode the six hundred. "Forward, the Light Brigade!
You mean, like Obama did with Iran?
Is there any indication that anyone is listening to Obama at all?
“Bill Clintons lead rear end coverer. I refuse to watch him as he is a Democrat strategist first and foremost.”
And we can all conclude that Steffy believes that the big payoff will be his role as Hillary’s clintorius.
I have been to Balaclava at that very spot Cardigan was an idiot
Which is exactly why the Olympics were awarded to China and Russia - they shining record of the way they treat their citizens and lie to the world.
Notice that every one of those "dire consequences" is economic. They think the world only cares about getting American taxpayer money. They won't dare consider anything other than words or money or symbolism, while Putin plays Risk and gobbles up more valuable territory... in much the same way that Germany gobbled up former provinces and ethnically German territory before slamming Poland and taking the mask off.
Sadly, the left doesn't believe in history as we know it, and so they don't pay attention to it.
There's no need for boots on the ground. How 'bout simply restoring the missile defense shield for Poland?
No, I guess not. It would take cojones to do that.
I don’t trust Putin, nor do I like him. I do respect him.
He is a leader. Our leader is a clown.
Putin knows what Snowden knows. Putin knows Obama is lame duck supreme. He knows Obama will continue to be bogged down by all the scandals and will get nowhere legislatively. He figures he has 2 years to arrange his part of the world the way he wants and that America will be that much further down the pole by then. No matter what we think of him, he has instilled pride in his country and recognizes the religious and moral side as being part of that. Obama is draining these aspects in his quest to diminish us as a country. Obama’s plan to gut the military insures we will not stand behind our allies. Welcome to a changed world.
Hasn’t obumbo run out of red paint yet? Let me see, how many “Red Lines” has he painted now? Odumbo is nowhere near the league Putin is playing in.
They reserve the right to hit Putin with a fluffy pillow. Maybe even a very fluffy pillow, if he really misbehaves!
“Obama is just another world leader.........”
“LEADER”? You are being way too generous with that title. Odumbo couldn’t lead a dead chicken.
That I know nothing about. But it does bring up the question of what is to follow here. Assume Russia stops funding Ukraine, gets its oil out without Ukranian pipelines, and Ukraine's new leaders turn to Europe and the US to replace Russian financial help. Europe's "help" to the poorer countries has been to put them hopelessly in debt, buy their assets, and even confiscate savings. Meanwhile, any country that doesn't make nice with Putin has an energy situation.
And Europe doesn't get the Crimea, which I'd suspect was the prize and the rationale for destabilizing Ukraine.
It boggles the mind that according to Obama Crimea can't through protests overturn the government that took over for the one that was driven out through protests. Even some US media experts are cynical.
What everybody is missing here is that these "peaceful protests" are no longer about having an election. They're about toppling the government. In how many countries has there been an offer to have another election? The protestors get that, and become more violent, with outside help.
Methinks that after Egypt, where the gov that was elected didn't work out well, it doesn't suit the global agenda.
It isn't even subtle manipulation anymore.
Putin has made a point of demonstrating that he is a manly man in hopes of thwarting Obama’s girlish advances, but Obama still has the hots for him. What else can Putin do, if not ignore Obama. The little faggot is a pest.
I guess your comment to my #22 is tongue in cheek humor.
The billions spent on foreign aid (from taxpayers’ pockets) is nothing more than lame attements to make the foreigners “like” us and it does just the opposite; they hate us because the influx of dollars shows how poor they are and their leaders pocket most of those dollars.
