Ukraine crisis: Angry Angela Merkel questions whether Putin is 'in touch with reality'

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel is reported to have become “really annoyed” about Russian President Vladimir Putin and has questioned whether he “was still in touch with reality.”

The German mass circulation Bild newspaper wrote on Monday that during a telephone conversation she held with US President Barack Obama to discuss the growing crisis in Ukraine she complained that Mr Putin was “living in another world.”

“She appears to have become really annoyed,” Bild remarked. The paper said it had gained inside information on the telephone exchange between the US and German leaders from American sources.

The two leaders roundly criticised Mr Putin in their conversation and agreed that Russia’s military intervention in Crimea was in violation of international law. A German government spokesman said that both stressed that it was important for the international community to respond to the crisis in unison.

Both were said to be in favour of sending an immediate fact finding mission to Ukraine and backed the idea of setting up of a contact group, possibly overseen by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, with the aim of ending the crisis through political dialogue.

Putin's in trouble now! Angela stamped her foot and Obama used the universal diplomatic code word "deplore". I'm sure Vladimir is now hiding in a bunker someplace in Siberia.

Then they came up with their "no holds barred" strategy! I was SHOCKED that they would consider such deadly action against any human being.

Putin better cover up quick, get on his body armor, alert his body guards. Angela & Barry are going to (I shudder to think of it!)...COLLECT FACTS!

Then they'll launch that weapon of all weapons: POLITICAL DIALOGUE!

Can you fathom the rage coursing through this lady's arteries that she would actually launch BOTH fact-finding and political-dialogue against an enemy?

And Barry, who cries at water-boarding and Gitmo, how can he hold his head up in polite society knowing he has teamed with Germany in bringing again to the world such terror?

For Putin, it’s the smart move. Now if he tries to annex the Donetsk region or move on Kiev, then we got big problems.

Dear Chancellor Merkel:

If you actually want to be taken seriously, instead of frivolous dithering, announce that you are sending a years’ worth of military gear for 500k Ukrainian reservists, to Kiev. Then publicly challenge Obama to do the same. That might get Putin’s attention.

Well Angie are you annoyed enough to agree to vote Pootey out of the G8? Since without Germany it can’t happen.

“Russia has just invaded the Ukraine”

False.

1) Crimea is NOT Ukraine, but an autonomous republic, with its own government, prime minister, parliment and budget.

2) The official agreement on the Russian navy base in Crimea stipulate that Russia can have as many as 25,000 troops there.
Last year, Russia had some 17,000. Since then it sent some 6,000 more.

3) On 30 March, the government of Crimea organise a referendum of the population on the future statute of Crimea. The will of the people must be respected by ALL.

"Putin’s reality is his control over substantial flows of oil and gas, especially to Germany.

Yup. Putin holds the cards.

Remember Reagan joking about bombing the Soviet Union with a live mike? That may have affected the Russians more than we will ever know. Putin may be having the same effect on the West. Obama sure doesn’t scare anybody, except his own citizens.

“living in another world.”

Would that be the world where he slaps the sh- out of Obama and tells him to be silent while men are talking?

The only question regarding what is in Putin’s mind is whether he wants to reconstitute the Russian Empire or the Soviet Union. I believe he is sane. He is not acting paranoid like Stalin. Nobody has claimed he is conducting purges. Putin is simply a narcissistic authoritarian.

He wants a strong Russia....and frankly a weak Russia might even be worse, because they’d lose control over their Muslim population.

As I understand it, the Autonomous Republic of Crimea is an autonomous parliamentary republic within Ukraine and is governed by the Constitution of Crimea in accordance with the laws of Ukraine.
