NYT buried this... Looking at Russian news headlines on Twitter, they do seem to have lost touch....

“sending an immediate fact finding mission to Ukraine and backed the idea of setting up of a contact group, possibly overseen by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, with the aim of ending the crisis through political dialogue.”

LOL!

Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel is reported to have become “really annoyed” about Russian President Vladimir Putin and has questioned whether he “was still in touch with reality/"

In response, France announced their surrender.

Soviets vs Nazis... like the last time, the US will not be involved directly until it gets attacked. Perhaps this time “Japan” will be Iran?

They haven’t lost touch of anything. They don’t want NATO bases in Crimea. Frau Merkel is going to have to accept that and more.

The German mass circulation Bild newspaper wrote on Monday that during a telephone conversation she held with US President Barack Obama to discuss the growing crisis in Ukraine she complained that Mr Putin was “living in another world.”

Putin's world might be looking out for Russia's interests and not worrying about what others think about it. Especially toothless tigers. -Tom

I think Putin is shaping reality while Obama is gutting the military.

I’m not proposing that the US get involved in the Crimea, I don’t really think we have a dog in that fight. But we should have a military such that we could if we chose to. The Chinese are watching, and so are our Asian allies. They are all making calculations based on what Putin does and what we do about it.

Sufficient weakness in Europe and the Middle East and we’ll find China’s Pacific border reaching out to include Guam.

Correct. Putin knows exactly what he is doing. He also knows that the West knows how to talk and that's about it. I'm sure he's already factored in boycotts, protests, sanctions, etc., and they'll just ride out the storm. In the end nothing will be done and they'll have secured the Crimea.

Obviously the US Oligarchs and Euro Kleptocrats had absolutely no contingency plans in place in case Russia decided to protect the Crimea. Utter fools. You have to anticipate every possible move in diplomatic chess.

sending an immediate fact finding mission to Ukraine... with the aim of ending the crisis through political dialogue.

Uh, Ma'am? This is political dialogue. Nothing makes a diplomatic point clearer than troops on the ground.

The reality is that Russia has just invaded the Ukraine and is in the process of consolidating an occupying force in the country. He plans on staying an converting the country back to Russian ownership.

It seems Obama and the rest of the West are the ones out of touch with reality.

In fact, he should care. The Russian economy will suffer because of it. Russian GDP had dropped 30% already. The Ruble is going down. Today, the Russian martkets lost >10% of value. The Russian economy cannot withstand occupation, sanctions and feeding hungry Crimeans and East Ukrainians (Russian-speaking population). It is similar to Georgia/Abhasia/Ossetia situation, only multiplied by a 100. Not all Russians agree with Putin on that. There were anti-war rallies in Moscow and St. Petersburg ruthlessly suppressed by the Police. Not all Russians want to fight Ukranians, who fought side by side with them against Hitler. Russia should not follow Zhirinovsky path to hell.

Obama and the EU thought this was a new world—a Global World where social justice and global warming were the most important things. Putin has just shown them—its the same old world—Power politics rule—has they have since the 18th Century. The 1980s called Obama and he never took the call. Lets just hope Putin doesn’t just roll over the Ukraine and keep going. Let him digest Criemea for a while.

Putin's in trouble now! Angela stamped her foot and Obama used the universal diplomatic code word "deplore". I'm sure Vladimir is now hiding in a bunker someplace in Siberia.

Then they came up with their "no holds barred" strategy! I was SHOCKED that they would consider such deadly action against any human being.

Both were said to be in favour of sending an immediate fact finding mission to Ukraine and backed the idea of setting up of a contact group, possibly overseen by the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe, with the aim of ending the crisis through political dialogue

Putin better cover up quick, get on his body armor, alert his body guards. Angela & Barry are going to (I shudder to think of it!)...COLLECT FACTS!

Then they'll launch that weapon of all weapons: POLITICAL DIALOGUE!

Can you fathom the rage coursing through this lady's arteries that she would actually launch BOTH fact-finding and political-dialogue against an enemy?

And Barry, who cries at water-boarding and Gitmo, how can he hold his head up in polite society knowing he has teamed with Germany in bringing again to the world such terror?

Dear Chancellor Merkel:

If you actually want to be taken seriously, instead of frivolous dithering, announce that you are sending a years’ worth of military gear for 500k Ukrainian reservists, to Kiev. Then publicly challenge Obama to do the same. That might get Putin’s attention.

“Russia has just invaded the Ukraine”

False.

1) Crimea is NOT Ukraine, but an autonomous republic, with its own government, prime minister, parliment and budget.

2) The official agreement on the Russian navy base in Crimea stipulate that Russia can have as many as 25,000 troops there.
Last year, Russia had some 17,000. Since then it sent some 6,000 more.

3) On 30 March, the government of Crimea organise a referendum of the population on the future statute of Crimea. The will of the people must be respected by ALL.
