The government will not curb trade with Russia or close London's financial centre to Russians as part of any possible package of sanctions against Moscow, according to an official document.
The document, which was photographed as a senior official carried it into a meeting in Downing Street, says that "the UK should not support for now trade sanctions or close London's financial centre to Russians", while it confirms that ministers ARE considering - along with other EU countries - visa restrictions and travel bans on key Russian figures.
It also says that ministers should "discourage any discussion (eg at Nato) of contingency military preparations" and support "contingency EU work on providing Ukraine with alternative gas" and oil supplies "if Russia cuts them off".

Gee wonder why money talks LOL!
The document was captured on camera as an official walked along Downing Street
This was the equivalent of the Nazis marching into the Rhineland.....Something to be concerned about, sure...but even back in 1936, nobody was going to go to war over it.
I think Obama’s starting to feel very lonely by now.
If I remember my history correctly, the French, ironically enough, did want to go to war over that move into the Rhineland.
The view of the 1936 French government was, “Let’s smack that little mustache right off his face” on the theory that it would prevent further aggressive moves by the Nazis in the future.
But the Brits said, “No, we’d rather not. Pip, pip, cheerio and all that.”
Blunder #1 by the British in the run-up to WWII.
Nick Robinson tweeted this as well and I read it on the BBC Ukraine blog within the last hour.
Europe is more economically intertwined with Russia at the end of the day and so why should Vlad be worried.
Obama and the EU are bluffing and blustering on this like Republicans do on cutting wasteful spending.
Bush sent ships to Georgia in 2008, but Vlad’s tanks rolled over Georgian police cars and he got the Ossetia and Abkhazia territories under Russian control.
And the world did zippo to change that fact on the ground and business went back to normal with the “Hillary reset” of 2009.
Further international sanctions against Russia are highly likely, according to US state department spokesperson Jen Psaki. Guardian Washington bureau chief Dan Roberts (@RobertsDan) reports:
If they continue on the path they are taking, we will continue to take steps too, she said. At this point, we are not just considering sanctions; we are preparing options right now.
We are far more forward down this path than we were yesterday, she said.
U.S. senator Chris Murphy, the chairman of the Senates Europe subcommittee, said the body is considering imposing sanctions on Russias banks, freezing assets of Russian public institutions and private investors and imposing travel bans because of its moves in Ukraine, Reuters reports.
Unilateral U.S. sanctions against Russia will have little effect if they are not matched by actions from Europe, Murphy advised.
I believe Hitler issued orders that the Germans would retreat if they so much as heard a shot from the French.
That’s not to say, they wouldn’t have gone down the path they ultimately did, had it happened that way, but who knows?
Thanks
yes the Russian energy material supplies to Ukraine are a larger % of Ukraine energy needs than are Russia energy raw material exports to western europe. However, as far as western Europe goes imports from Russian DO make up about 1/3 each of western europes supplies of coal, oil & natural gas.
yes, the EU needs the supplies, and Russia needs the hard currency.
It seems like those things will shape EU actions. How much will they shape Putin’s.
So Obama/Biden did not even consult with allies to setup the proposed financial boycott of Russia ? They just thought if Obama called for it, all the allies would go along ? We are being led by complete morons.
Hey, don’t insult morons with that comparison!
Professor Sir David Metcalf, chairman of the Home Offices Migration Advisory Committee (MAC), said the government had effectively been giving away visas to some of the worlds wealthiest people.
A report by the committee revealed 433 Russian millionaires have come to this country since 2008 under an investor visa scheme which allows successful applicants to live in Britain in return for a minimum £1 million investment in government gilts - effectively a loan - but does not grant them a UK passport.
From what I remember reading, Hitler was on pins and needles during that episode, and yes, you’re right, Hitler did issue orders to beat a hasty retreat if the French so much as fired a single shot.
Hitler would’ve looked like a fool; he’s gone far out on a limb, and he didn’t any room to climb back. It’s been speculated the German General Staff would have seriously considered launching a coup d’etat to overthrow his government.
They came close to that under Franz Halder during the Sudetenland Crisis; if Hitler had issued the order to invade Czechoslovakia, Halder had a committed group of conspirators who had a bona fide plan to overthrow Hitler.
What happened? Yep.....Neville Chamberlain happened. He inadvertently saved Hitler’s hide.
Blunder #x by the British in the run-up to WWII.
And after that, no General dare opposed him.....until Barbarossa started to fall apart.
Precisely. And more’s the pity.
Neville Chamberlain may well have (naïvely) thought that he was securing peace at the price of a “....faraway land, people of whom we know nothing” but all he did was guarantee WWII would happen.
He did finally stand up in regard to Poland, but that was too little, too late. And we all know what followed.
And Obama’s bullshit walks: Putin has spent a good part of the last decade paying off the right people in Europe, especially Germany, and apparently, the City of London.
Remember a lot of obligatch from Russia escape to London and France get away from Vlady
