Film star Sean Connery is urging fellow Scots to vote for independence when a referendum is held in September.
The longtime independence advocate says in The Sun on Sunday newspaper that the opportunity to separate from the rest of Britain is too good an opportunity to miss.
He says independence would galvanize the film and creative industries, creating new jobs in Scotland.
Connery no longer lives there and said the decision should be made by the people who choose to live and work in Scotland.
He said a vote for independence would bring renewed focus on Scottish culture, heritage and creative excellence.
His view is not shared by rock star David Bowie, who has urged Scottish voters to remain part of the United Kingdom.

I wonder if Scotland has been invaded by muslims like the rest of England has? And if not... I support them 100% in trying to break free and stop the muslim welcoming madness.
Gee...never really knew they were behold’n.
I generally don’t agree with film stars on anything but in this case I do. Why should Scotland pay in part for the Royal family? Why should they be on the hook for a failed welfare state and a country overrun by Muzzies? If they can get out, then get out while the getting is good.
Mr. Connery is a very famous, very wealthy man, and has been such as long as I can remember, going back almost 50 years. His lifestyle and day to day needs are likely very different from the average Scot. I would be interested to know how the non-famous, non wealthy Scottish think about separating from Great Britian. What was an ingrained battle for independance last century may be different today, what with the British and EU economy so unpredictable.
I think it started the other way around when James VI of Scotland was declared King of England and Ireland.
Take is back again and declare freedom
What the f....?
I thought that was returned to Scotland several years ago.
OMG, I almost forgot about that movie “Zardoz”. I imagine Connery wants to forget it, too...
I like Sean Connery movies but he has been living in other countries most of his life. He should be living in Scotland.
But only if the EU nags let them.... /spit
I think not so much muslims as leftist, environmentalist, socialist wackos.
At least that’s what I get from friends there and visiting Scotland based news and other websites. Shetland seems especially infected.
This would be their best hope of controlling the flow of muslims and others into Scotland. It’s obvious Great Britain doesn’t give a tin shi!t about it’s history and culture.
It would remove several Labour MPs from Westminster.
I never heard of it before today.
Unfortunately, that photo has injured me to the point where I may need to log off and go find an eyewash station...
America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!
And as the wags of the day said, “went from having a King to a Queen...”
“I’ll take ‘Easy as Sh1+’ for $500, Alex”
It was returned, I believe.
My question is, can they support themselves as their own country? Do they count as tourism and film making as their primary sources of income? What do they produce (besides scotch)?
From what I have read England would be the major benefactor if Scotland breaks away. The amount of welfare money poured into Scotland is gigantic.
Good greif! Is that Barbarella’s brother?
Thanks, you have answered my question. I forget, how relatively new our country is over here, where a ninety year old Redwood is considered ‘ancient’.
Frankly, who gives a rip if the whole b****y U.K. dissolves!!!? They’ve squandered their birthright & descended into utter moral chaos.
“What difference does it make now!!?”
Wool and haggis, which are equally edible.
It’s what I would do if I were scottish.
HAHA! After Zardoz it kind of makes it harder to take what he says seriously.
What is worse than a Scotsman trying to play a Soviet submarine captain with a half Scottish, half Russian accent? A Scotsman, playing a Spaniard, with a samurai sword, mentoring a Frenchman playing a Scotsman.
I agree! Not a drop of Scottish blood in me ( that I know) but I love all things Scottish, even bagpipes! The time of “Empires” is over. Scotland should be free! They need another William Wallace!
You mean half Scottish, half Lithuanian accent.
Damn...you mean they’ve turned into California???
I’m not sure if Scotland wants to be independent from the UK. What will happen once the oil and natural gas from the North Sea runs out?
Its not scotch. Its whisky, given directly to the Scots by God.
Because it's their royal family. Has been ever since 1603, when a reigning Scottish king inherited the English throne (not the other way round). The manifesto of the 'yes' campaign for Scottish independence includes a commitment to keep the United Kingdom monarch as Head of State (in exactly the same way as she now is for Australia, Canada, New Zealand and others).
Judging by the polls, nor are the Scots.
Thanks for reminding me that I am history challenged. I did not realize that the Royals were Scottish in the far mists of time. I thought the Royals were English to the core because they have no accent, and because they are dumb enough to believe in global warming. I thought they were more German then anything else.
So the Scots get more from the treasury then they put in and the Royals are Scottish, how about the point that the Muzzies are slowly taking over England and maybe the Scots don’t like it? This is what I get for hanging out with the smart kids, it shows the gaps in my education, I am thankful for that, that can be corrected and will be if I manage to live long enough. More than one poster has pointed out my ignorance and I am grateful to all of you.
I will say the Royals tend to pick out some good looking women.
Not quite. The lineal ancestry of the *current* "royal line" of Great Britain stems from George I, who was German, and Elector of Hanover. The last attempt at putting a Stuart on the throne failed at the Battle of Culloden in 1745...
Hmmm....Connery or Bowie? I will reserve judgement until Sheena Easton weighs in. She is an expat Scot living in Nevada.
