Ratings for the Academy Awards telecast in the nation's biggest television markets are up 7 percent over last year.
The Nielsen company said Monday that New York, Kansas City, Mo., and Chicago were the strongest markets for Sunday's telecast, where "12 Years a Slave" won the Academy Award for best picture.
Nielsen's estimate for how many people actually watched the show was expected later Monday. The Oscars are frequently the second most-watched television program of the year after the Super Bowl, with viewership topping 40 million people last year.

Is “Oscars” a new reality show?
Nothing like bubble loving celebs congratulating themselves over and over again.
I continue to be amazed at the wide and deep influence of Hollywood on US society. I don’t understand why, but I do understand it is probably 95% negative.
Reckon how many FReepers watched? And why?
who is watching this crap?
Watched my favorite old movies. None of today’s garbage can compare with the classics.
I Scarcely Give A S....
About Hollywood idiots.
they used to be about entertaining movies....now they are about politically correct movies that nobody goes to see. (I rarely go to movies anyway but when I do, the ones I like, are never celebrated in the Oscars)
I haven’t wasted my time with them for about 20 years....
I didn’t watch it, and haven’t in decades, BUT I was interested this year.
I wanted to know if Frozen would win best song for Let It Go. But I just waited and read the articles to see.
The white guilt movie nomination gave them no choice but to watch!
I watched “Fantastic Voyage” and “The OxBow Incident” that I had DVRd
I’m becoming more and more removed from pop culture. That’s ok by me.
No way the ratings are up 7% for watching the complete show.
Don’t know what memo Ellen got but, she seemed subdued and lost.
The show was boring and that was the comment from friends who were looking forward to her usual comedic talent.
Most of us got up during the show and found other things to do.
Hosted by a big flaming man-hating homosexual? I won’t give her the time to watch her and wait for her to trash America.
Altho I did hear that they were rather tame last night. Anyway, I’ve no interest in watching prom nite in the liberal wasteland.
Don’t blame me. I watched The Walking Dead.
Has an Oscar telecast ever won an Emmy?
So did we...but would switch at the commercials to see what was up.
Every time we went there, DeGenerate was on, once with the Glinda hat on, and we couldn’t watch anymore. Do you ever remember Hope or even Crystal having to stoop to props and schtick to get laughs?
Another prime example of dumbing down....
These nimrods can’t seem to shake the pandering and celebration of another slavery film.
Watched it. Too cold in Central Tx. To do anything outside. Cold foggy rain and temps into low 20’s. Kinda liked Gravity.
Oh wow! I haven’t seen that since 1967 in El Paso TX! First real wide screen theater I was ever in! Now I think of it, it was also the ONLY truly wide screen theater I’ve ever been in!
Good choices. I watched Lawrence of Arabia.
To be honest with you, I haven’t watched an Oscar show since I was a kid. I think Bob Hope was before my time, but I do remember Billy Crystal. I’m pretty sure both of them could carry the job on the strength of their wit alone.
In the 1980s, Joe Bob Briggs concluded that there are too many damn talk shows because the only people left for them to interview were other talk show hosts.
And it’s still true.
I highly recommend you try to find some video of Hope hosting...
Very clever and classy...
A famous joke of his goes “Welcome to the Oscars....or, as we call it in our house: Passover....”....very funny, no?
Only four of the Oscars go to actors. It’s mostly a trade show to honor people who never get the spotlight otherwise - and to teach people about film.
There is a big difference between tuning in and watching. When the real numbers come in how many viewers actually stayed to the end of this liberal love fest.
PS: Good walking dead episode.
Thanks for the recommend. I’ll check Youtube.
uuuuhhhhhh....there was nothing else on TV and it is stay-at-home weather in huge portions of the US.
The Oscars are always highly rated.
