Humanist group sues to remove cross-shaped WWI memorial in Maryland

A humanist advocacy group has filed a federal lawsuit to remove a cross-shaped World War I memorial in Prince George's County, alleging the display violates the First Amendment.

The American Humanist Association says it does not object to the fact that the Bladensburg Cross memorializes soldiers, but rather the placement of the Christian symbol on property owned by a government agency, The Daily Record reported.

"We are certainly recommending coming up with a monument inclusive of all religious groups," said Monica Miller, a lawyer with the association's Appignani Humanist Legal Center.

In 2012, the group sent a letter to the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission demanding that the cross be removed from the war memorial. The group said it would have no objection if the cross was on private land, MyFoxDC.com reported.

According to the report, the lawsuit names as plaintiffs two local American Humanist Association members and a third individual -- each of whom had "unwelcome contact" with the monument.

Steven Lowe, a plaintiff from Washington, said was "shocked" when he first saw the cross and is "upset" whenever he passes it, according to the complaint obtained by the newspaper.

I’m sick to death of this. The courts need to apply commonsense in these cases and just say “don’t look if it offends you”

For those not familiar with the area, the cross stands in a small traffic circle at the foot of one of the Anacostia River bridges. The circle is the intersection of Bladensburg Road, US Alt. 1, and highways 202/450, which are funneling at that point across the bridge, so it's completely surrounded by highways. It is a prominent location.

The linked news story shows an unflattering perspective. Time has not been kind to Bladensburg, but if the photographer had stood on the other side of the monument, he would have shown the riverbank and bridge. If you pull up a satellite image, you will see that the bridge is immediately below the confluence of the Eastern Branch and the Northwest Branch, which unite at Bladensburg to form the Anacostia River. This was a port in colonial and early federal times, but the river silted up long ago.

Humanists claim that people can be “good without God.” To prove it, they spend their lives persuing the destruction of all that is good.

Whoever these people are, they must not drive around Maryland much. I see little roadside crosses all over Maryland, many of which appear to be on public property.

Hey all you morons of the American Humanist Association: If you really want to get offended, ride over to the Arlington National Cemetery and take a look at the thousands of white crosses. Those are the folks who fought and died so that your sorry asses could consume oxygen upon this Earth that God created.

Yep. An atheist is an atheist no matter what name they hide behind.

They have learned from the homosexuals. Just keep pushing and Christians will roll over.

You’d think these people are vampires, as terrified as they are of crosses.

The following is a listing of Civil War Army Corps Badges (symbols) that often adorn gravestones and Monuments in the memory of the men who served. The following Corps contained a cross figure:
V; VI; XVI; XVIII; XIX and so these symbols will have to be obliterated.
The VII and XI Corps have a moon crescent symbol and they can stay as can VIII Corps symbol which has a Star of David; Diversity you know.
A number have triangles and three leaf symbols which might be construed as being part of the religious TRINITY sign.
I hope none of the MLK statues do not show any Christian symbols, removal of those can cause a racial riot..

Let’s mount a big campaign to remove all the publicly funded humanist memorials that make no reference to a superior power. They offend me, and make me feel excluded. How can they do that to us?

Bladensburg, Md.
Where the Battle of Bladensburg took place in 1814. Also known as the Bladensburg Races, because of the way our defenders broke ranks and ran from the Redcoats on their way to burn Washington, DC.
Also was the home of the Crossroads Tavern where one of the greatest of the unknown guitar players,Roy Buchanan, played for many years.
The Peace Cross is a landmark enjoyed by many for close to 100 years.
This clown who was shocked when he saw it ought to get a life.
