Skip to comments.Poll: Democrats’ advantage on key issues is not translating to a midterm-election edge

The American people trust Democrats more than Republicans on some of the key issues of the day, but that has not translated into any political advantage in the battle for control of the House and Senate in this years midterm elections, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.
Midterm elections generally favor the party that does not hold the White House, which gives the GOP a head start this year. Political handicappers rate Republicans as favorites to maintain their House majority and say the GOP has a legitimate opportunity to gain the six seats it needs to take control of the Senate. The Post-ABC survey affirms those projections, showing Republicans in a stronger position than Democrats in the states with Senate races this fall and more than holding their own in the battle for control of the House. In the 34 states with Senate races, 50 percent of voters say they favor Republicans and 42 percent favor Democrats.
That is the case despite the Republican Partys poor image nationally and its deficit on some important issues. About two in three Americans say the GOP is out of touch with the concerns of most people in the United States today.
Fewer than six in 10 Republicans say their party is in touch with the public, while four in 10 say the party is out of touch. But that is significantly better than last year, in the wake of Republicans 2012 presidential election defeat. Then, just four in 10 said they were in touch, while almost half said they were not.
The public is evenly divided on whether President Obama and the Democrats share the concerns of average Americans. The fact that neither could muster a clear majority is one sign of the publics unhappiness with elected officials.

That first line reveals the sheer panic of an impending cranial explosion.
Cry me a river Walpo.
“on SOME of the key issues...”
Yup, that’s panic.
I trust Dems on one key issue: getting screwed.
We are going to return the favor in November.
Seems like they fail to mention what “key issues” people favor the commie liars on.
Huskrrrr summed it up perfectly
Even though the Republicans don’t deserve to win control of the Senate, they will likely do so. This won’t do much because the Republicans behave like dems on many issues. Hopefully, the Senate takeover will prevent some of the more extreme judicial nominees from passing.
I trust the Demonrats to continue the ruination of the United States advanced by Barack Oh Bummer!
The problem I see is with the GOP. They are trying to coast to victory on the backs of conservatives. They want 50%+1 votes, then the McCains and McConnells will be back in the drivers seat again.
What issues??? I say abc/post lies and they believe their own fabricated polling.
“Fewer than six in 10 Republicans say their party is in touch with the public, while four in 10 say the party is out of touch. But that is significantly better than last year, in the wake of Republicans 2012 presidential election defeat. Then, just four in 10 said they were in touch, while almost half said they were not.”
Better because minds have changed, or more of the disaffected have given up and left?
30% Rat 20% Rep. 40% Ind. and ABC still can’t manipulate the poll enough to favor the commies.
Ding, ding, ding - we have a thread winnah!
Whenever I mention the current occupant of our WH and his cohorts, I here instant profanity. My guess is that the RATs are viewed as human waste these days.
Quote from the article: “The American people trust Democrats more than Republicans on some of the key issues of the day, but that has not translated into any political advantage in the battle for control of the House and Senate in this years midterm elections, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll.”
Uhhh, WaPo that very sentence would indicate to me that either your polling is screwed up or you have misused the word “trust.” If the American people “trusted” democrats more with the key issues, then they would be in no trouble. But I think WaPo you have to craft this spin because you simply can’t admit to yourselves that the “if you like your plan you can keep it” lie was a bridge too far with the American people.
‘30% Rat 20% Rep. 40% Ind. and ABC still cant manipulate the poll enough to favor the commies.”
I don’t know, it might be accurate. Given the manner in which the Republican-e has been going about its business it would not be shocking to me that many of those independents are disgusted conservatives who left the Republican party.
