Boehner gets official snub by CPAC: No invitation to conference this year
washingtontimes.com ^ | 3/3/14 | Seth McLaughlin

House Speaker John A. Boehner, who has tangled repeatedly with the right wing of the Republican Party, has not been invited to this week’s Conservative Political Action Conference, a major snub at the annual gathering and a sign of the top Republican officeholder’s struggle to find common ground with grass-roots activists.

People familiar with CPAC’s planning, who spoke only on the condition of anonymity, said the American Conservative Union, which hosts the event, never sent an invitation to Mr. Boehner, in part because it wanted the focus this year to be on leading conservative thinkers at the grass-roots level and not at the congressional or party leadership level.

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who addressed the conference last year, was not asked to give his own speech, but rather to serve on one of the conference’s panels.

“We wanted this to be about conservatives, not party leaders in Washington,” one source said.

Despite that, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican who has fallen out of favor with some grass-roots conservatives and faces a tea party-backed challenger in the party primary this year, will address the conference, his office said.

Mr. Boehner, Ohio Republican, used to be a regular at CPAC, but the three-day gathering that begins Thursday will mark the second in a row that he has missed after passing up an invitation last year. The speaker has grown increasingly vocal in recent months about his frustration with tea party members of the House Republican caucus who have broken with leadership on key votes.

The antipathy is mutual.

Wasn’t it Boehner that started purging real conservatives from House Committee Leadership positions as soon as he had been given a second term as House Speaker?

Seems to me that he went on the attack against US to begin with.

He must be relieved of duty as soon as it’s possible.

Yup, and he also gave himself five votes on the Rules committee to consolidate his own power over legislation and everything else.

I'll really be impressed when I see CPAC bar Mitt Romney from even showing up.

I'm disappointed that Santorum is on the list of speakers. Sure, he's a "good" Christian, but he's a pretty lousy limited government conservative. The research I did on him when he was in the primaries last time around, indicate a politician who wears his personal religiosity on his sleeve to make himself look saintly (which the Founders never did, though they openly referenced Christianity in forming the Constitution and Declaration of Independence) but who lacks entirely the will or intention of shrinking government.

Being against abortion doesn't make you a conservative. It makes you against abortion. I know many liberal Democrats who, like me, are Christians who hate abortion. They are not limited government Christian conservatives ... and neither is Santorum. *sigh*

I still recall the major funding hit that degraded our fine Military, courtesy of sequestration.

Mister Boehner is an awful negotiator and he seems (from my distant vantage) to be pitifully unprepared.

I do not think that he is a bad person, just a failure at SOH, and deserving of the snub and implied insult.

I also noticed that along with sef-promoting Santorum, Paul Ryan has also been asked to speak. So much for not going with “Party leadership.”

Our family hasn’t voted for Pete for the last two elections. Keep wishing someone would step up to the plate and run against him that we could support. Unfortunately don’t see it happening at least for a while. Pete is, IMO, one of the most ineffective do nothing (R) Reps in DC.

Yeah, remember last year when McConnell gave his “root and branch” speech before CPAC, then did absolutely nothing to defund or repeal Obamacare, and in fact, helped to fund it and undermined any effort to repeal it.

They’re all a sham. And they know that we know they’re a sham, so they don’t feel so bad about delivering a phony speech anyway.

I completely agree with you on Pete.

I suppose that the FACT that he was Chief Of Staff for John Wayne McCornyn should have been a clue for all of us. I knew that in the beginning and had grave concerns about it, but we got saddled with him, anyway.

To be perfectly honest, I am tempted to vote for his RAT opponent in November, just to get him out of our misery. That’s my level of frustration with him and his lack of integrity.

Thanks, onyx!! It's so nice to get moral support (no pun intended!) here! The older I've gotten, the more crucial abortion has become as an issue for me. It and the homosexual agenda are evil and depraved, two peas in a pod; any Republican (ain't mentionin' any names, but his initials is MITT ROMNEY) who endorses using the force of government to validate either one, therefore requires people to vote FOR evil and depravity plain and simple.

One's position on abortion has zero to do with whether or not one is "conservative" or "Republican." Plenty of Democrats, screaming liberal Democrats, are as opposed to abortion as I am.

There are two primary definitions for "conserve," the root of the word "conservative." One of those definitions is to "preserve from harm or decay." The other is "to use sparingly."

Social conservatives want to use the force of government to to "preserve" society "from harm or decay."

Limited government conservatives, including limited government Christian conservatives like me, want to "use government sparingly."

Dennis Prager fails to see that the divide isn't between "social" and "fiscal" conservatives. The divide is between "use government to protect people from themselves" conservatives, and "use government sparingly" conservatives.

One wants to use the force of government for social engineering. The other respects that government is a FORCE that is a dangerous servant and a fearful master. That master has today in America become so fearful that righteous, moral Americans are FORCED to finance abortion and FORCED to accommodate open homosexuality.

"I would go with Gohmert before Gowdy. But, that’s just me. I prefer a TEXAN that’s also a Vet."

I think I agree, but Gowdy is one of the most persuasive members of that body. Gohmert, on the other hand, might have had this in mind when he chose not to oppose Cornyn, either that or he judged Cornyn to be unbeatable. (I voted early for Stovall).

That’s what I was thinking, too, Gohmert might be looking at the speakership.

Stockman said he jumped in at the last minute when Gohmert announced he wasn’t going for Cornyn’s job.

I agree with both of you on Gohmert. I had contacted his office several times asking him to challenge John Wayne McCornyn. I like Trey Gowdy, too. I’m just partial to Gohmert as a TEXAN and as a Vet. We need to stick together! :-)

I also voted for DWAYNE STOVALL this morning.

GOD BLESS TEXAS!

Found out not too long ago that one of Pete’s top staff person has temporarily left him and is working on the Cornyn campaign. Another staff person has left the group and is now working in one of the western states. Really miss him as he was our “go to” guy if we wanted something passed on to Pete. Staffer would never say anything negative about Pete, even after leaving but he did remark one time that Pete “doesn’t listen well”.

Pete has spoken at a couple of our local Republican meetings and is just a total jerk. Don’t know that I would vote Democrat but I can guarantee you that no one in our family will vote for Olson. The sad thing is that I doubt if he really cares one way or another. He just wants to be part of the inside power group so is going to be a good little Boner lapdog.

I will hold my fire on voting for a RAT until I have a better idea on how we look on retaining control in the House this November. However, IF it’s looks like we will make substantial conservative gains, then I may just go ahead and do so. We had that useless Lampson for that one term and it didn’t kill us. Might just be the thing to rid ourselves of the RINO, Olson.

I don’t buy the premise here. Boehner & Pribus are unpopular with the base and this is an election year. The decision to put them in the background must have been done in agreement with the establishment friendly ACU. McConnell’s speech pretty much proves that. He’s just as hated Boehner but in a tight race. He wants to troll for base votes at CPAC and the ACU is happy to accommodate him.
