WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama returned to the subject of mass shootings on Tuesday by proposing to spend millions of dollars more on gun safety programs, inspections of retailers and background checks for people buying firearms.
If enacted by a U.S. Congress that has been wary of gun control measures, the $182 million package would advance an issue that rose to the top of the national agenda after the December 2012 shooting of 20 children and six adults at a Newtown, Connecticut, elementary school.
The White House put forward the package as part of a proposed budget for the government fiscal year that begins on October 1.
Included in the package is $13 million to improve the background check system run by the FBI and $22 million more for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which inspects federally licensed firearms dealers.

They couldn’t prevent the Boston Bombings with input from Russia.....who thinks they will be able to stop shootings by psychos?
Which accounted for zero mass shootings.
What a lying sack of poop this guy ios.
Anyone want to take a guess what republicans will do after they make a little bit of noise.
Yes, more money always solves a problem.
This funding is way too low for what bo wants to do.
I see it as a small amount that rinos could vote for, sensible you know, but is a place holder for ‘the pen’ to add to.
This would be the last thing that such monies would be used for. More lies. Obama/Holder already take as much of our money as they want to attack the Second Amendment and our rights.
Fast and Furious anyone??
Just JAIL THE TYRANTS!!!
Run , hide and cower ?
Just another “Money For Cronies” ploy.
Buy more guns for good guys to carry in public. That would actually work.
> Like the government can prevent mas shootings...
C’mon, you gotta understand.
The gummint’s idea of preventing mass shootings is to disarm the public.
That way, only the gummint can conduct mass shootings. Of course, such would be completely legal and would have the blessing of our benevolent dictator Barraq Hussein 0dunga and the head of his SS, Eric “Heinrich Himmler” Holder.
I agree. He can’t manage his own checkbook, how does he get away with such BS!!!
Yeah, that’ll do it.
We have mass shootings because we have a very unhappy society and way too many crazy people running around loose. They’re just expressing their right to be crazy, remember (a big thing in the 1970s, which is why we had psychotics cutting off their grandmother’s head before going on a mass killing spree with a knife, etc.).
Which accounted for zero mass shootings.
I dunno, the ATF got a bushel of Mexicans killed.
...And just when I thought the resident could not get more stupid than he has already shown us he is, he comes up with this great idea.
Now if he can only get every state to pass a law against mass murdering, he will probably be be elected president for life .or something.
I’d like to use that money to check the backgrounds of people who become president. They (he) have the power to conduct some EXTREME mass shootings, here or elsewhere.
Well, he, I mean CNN came out with the headline that military has the greatest amount of mentally deranged people; and Liam neeson’s latest film non stop clearly portrays the villian to be the military deranged mass murderer, and the helpful guardian angel type as the Muslim, so maybe he’ll just make the short cut now - sooner than later
And take the money from the military
Maybe Paul Ryan can advise him while he’s pretending to be critical
Who's national agenda? Certainly not my national agenda. Certainly not the national agenda of most citizens.
It's the national agenda of Yahoo Finance, and some other idiots without a clue.
Not even on ONE person's clothing.. NONE ANYWHERE!
It’s not about preventing mass shootings. It’s about “gun control.” Nothing less.
They never talk about taking guns from violent criminals. Only from honest, non-violent normal people.
Zero seems to have an ongoing problem with input from Russia. The latest from Putin is no exception. If he can’t make sense of a straight up tip, he probably won’t understand FO or KMA either.
If 9/11 and events afterwards haven’t taught us anything else, the should have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt the federal government is seriously incompetent.
As a measure of that, long ago the ATF cut the number of FFL inspectors in half. It’s tedious and boring work for those that would prefer the adrenaline rush of breaking doors down and killing women and children ala Waco.
Now the blind pig has found an acorn it threw away as worthless decades ago.
Preventing mass shootings is easy.
1. Fund the Civilian Marksmanship Program (done).
2. Repeal all laws that infringe on the right of the people to keep and bear arms.

Woodham went on to wound seven others. The school’s assistant principal, Joel Myrick, retrieved a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol from his truck and, spotting him near the parking lot, shouted for Woodham to stop.

When Odighizuwa left the building where the shooting took place, he was approached by two students with personal firearms and one unarmed student.

Because of the quick actions of a former police officer from Minnesota named Jeanne Assam, that number could easily have been much, much higher.

http://www.keepandbeararms.com/information/XcIBViewItem.asp?ID=1446 Late at night on Tuesday, December 17, two men armed with recently-stolen pistols herded 20 customers and employees of a Shoney’s restaurant in Anniston, Ala., into the walk-in refrigerator, and locked it. Continuing to hold the manager at gunpoint, the men began robbing the restaurant. Then one of the robbers found a customer who had hidden under a table and pulled a gun on him. The customer, Thomas Glenn Terry, legally armed with a .45 semi-automatic pistol, fired five shots into that robber’s chest and abdomen, killing him instantly. The other robber, who was holding the manager at gunpoint, opened fire on Terry and grazed him. Terry returned fire, hitting the second robber several times and wounding him critically.
There are MANY others, but the point is clear. Repeal gun laws to save lives in mass shootings. When seconds count, the police are minutes away, but civilians are already there.
Come to think of it, you’re right; nothing made public.
Why not use that money to do blanket round-ups of thugs and gang members?
Oh wait. that would be RACIST!
All the money in the world won’t stop mass shootings!
I don’t agree with every said at these sites but I certainly do think Sandy Hook was a weird false flag designed to get the public to give up their guns. Way too many strange things aspects that cumulatively don’t add up.
One example is a picture of the school which doesn’t appear to be a functional school - while there are satellite image pictures of a full elementary school a few miles down the road with cars and buses when Sandy Hook is empty -
One can even see 26 Christmas trees behind Sandy Hook the day of the shooting in the back parking lot and they are countable. The exact amount that were to be planted there afterwards in honor of the apparent deceased.
It would be interesting if somebody looked at, say, the top 20 mass shootings and see how many of them might have been prevented with these laws in force.
The Newtown massacre certainly wouldn’t have been.
A little loan to the Brady Bunch.
I don’t want to see Obama given a damn thing. But if the R’s examine what is being proposed, and deem it non-infringing, or acceptable after some changes, and they feel they should be seen to support some “gun-safety” measure, then GET SOMETHING IN RETURN. That’s how you negotiate. Don’t settle for the other side getting 80% of what they want while we get nothing.
does not take money to prevent mass shootings. Cancel ALL firearms restrictions, go to national constitutional carry and encourage school personnel to carry on the job. Require a weapon and certificate of combat/self defense training to board any train, bus or airplane providing transportation within the boundaries of the United States. There are probably a few points that I missed but do the above and 99% of the mass shootings and hijackings will be pure history.
Show me one law that would have kept those children and the 6 adults alive and I’ll back it. So far, I have seen nothing that could have prevented that nut from doing what he did. Like it or not, that is reality.
