Judge rules against New Jersey teen suing parents for tuition support

MORRIS PLAINS, N.J. - A New Jersey couple does not have to pay for their 18-year-old daughter's college education, a judge ruled Tuesday, CBS New York reports.

Judge Peter Bogaard denied Rachel Canning's request $600 a month in support, high school tuition back pay, college tuition and legal fees.

But he said he would revisit the issue of college tuition at the end of April, about a month after her financial aid forms are due.

Earlier her lawyer said the parents of the high school honor student should have sought help for their daughter rather than cutting her off financially for misbehaving, the teen's lawyer said in a court hearing Tuesday. Canning is suing her parents, whom she alleges were abusive. She is seeking tuition money for her final high school semester and college.

During Tuesday's hearing, Rachel Canning barely made eye contact with her parents, CBS 2′s Alice Gainer reported.

The Morris Catholic High School cheerleader has been staying with a friend's family since the beginning of November. Her friend's father, attorney and former Morris County Freeholder John Inglesino, is bankrolling the lawsuit.

"In the four months that Rachel had been with the Inglesinos, these people have not called her, they have not come to see her, they have not sent a penny to her or to her benefactors," Rachel Canning's attorney, Tanya Helfand, told the judge.

GOOD!

Is 18 old enough in NJ to be ‘emancipated?’ This brat basically ran away from home and is sheltering elsewhere.

18 and OUT in my family; sooner if you’re a brat, LOL!

Wait, what? Wins for common sense are so few these day, I can’t believe this happened.

“...Judge Peter Bogaard noted that Rachel Canning’s behavior over the past year has been in question — one or two school suspensions, drinking, losing her captaincy on the cheerleading squad and being kicked out of the campus ministry....”

My, my, my...I guess there’s more to this than the previous press reports that stated she was a model, honor student.

Ah yes, Rachel has a learning experience in growing up and she needed it badly.

Isn’t that what “tough love” is all about?
Change your ways girl if you want to live at home, otherwise your out in the cold. If her friends parents weren’t letting her stay at their house and bankrolling her lawsuit, she would have been back home long ago.

Her friend's father, attorney and former Morris County Freeholder John Inglesino, is bankrolling the lawsuit.

Something doesn't smell right about this guy allowing this girl to reside in his home for all these months and spending his own money to force this girl's parents into court.

I wonder what his wife is thinking?

I still do not understand why this “Good Guy” has gotten himself involved with this families problems. There is something fishy going on just what is unanswered question, but it smells rotten.

Yep, my niece went thru a number of years of rebellion. Dropped out of college, got involved with drugs, moved in with a black dude........etc......

I don't remember what the change was but she returned home, went back to college locally, became an x-ray technician then went on to medical school and is now a doctor.

All at her own expense I might add because she blew her chance of parental financial aid when she first dropped out of college..........

Good call by the judge.

Now, I hope two things happen in wake of the ruling:

-That the daughter comes to her senses and grows up a bit.

-That this family can reconcile. As ugly as this situation is, I’d hate for the parents and child to become permanently estranged.

Not to be sick but you know some sleazy porn guy will offer her some money after all this is over. Stupid girl just advertized to the world that she’s a troubled teen willing to do anything for a buck.
